Years ago, probably around 1998 both of my big toes came down with the dreaded fungus. After much suffering with my right big toe, the toenail finally came off and boy the relief I felt. The left big toe didn't have as much fungus but has troubled me ever since. The toenail is growing with no nail suface on the left of the nail. This causes alot of pain here lately. I decided to take control and attack and get rid of this problem. I trimed back the nail that was dead and not even close to the nail bed. My left big toe has since got really red and swelded and it hurts to touch it. I am soaking my feet in salt water and putting antibotic cream on it twice a day. No relief. I need help, what can I do?

Continually keeping the area 'wet' with an ointment or cream is simply mascerating the area. You need to try and dry it out. For the pain, soak in cold water twice a day. Dry your feet really well and then apply peroxide to kill any bacteria and to dry out the area. Apply the peroxide each time after soaking and when you get out of the shower. Wear loose fitting shoes that do not put any pressure on the toes or the nails. If it doesn't clear up in two weeks, see your podiatrist.
