what causes thin stools

A few things. Spasms and contractions in the colon can squeeze the stool into those thin shapes that we sometimes see. Rather than expelling waste with one efficient propulsion, folks with IBS suffer with spasms that inch the waste along.

Sometimes constipation can cause thin stools. If there is a back-up of old fecal matter in the colon, stool can sometimes squeeze around the impaction and appear in all kinds of shapes.

Lack of fiber can play a part as well. Fiber will bulk the stool and give it more girth. This works well for people who suffer from occassional constipation. For those of us with chronic C, not so good!
