Hi, I just finished taking 84 tabs of Lamisil. I went back to my doctor to see if he can prescribe more, but he was against going more than that. I've been with toenail fungus for about 10+ years now and it's pretty much on all of my nails and some being worse than others. Some are thick and others aren't as bad. I know Lamisil takes awhile to work but I really wanted to take advantage as much as possible. What's bothering me the most is that I will be going on vacation in July and will be in CANCUN and would like to have no shoes on, being that I will be with people wondering why I don't have sandals on. Hmmm....that's gonna be a though one to ride out if this is not gone by then. What can I do in the mean time. Like I mentioned, I've just completed 84 tabs of Lamisil. Have any others taken more then 84 tabs?

Any help would be appreciated. I was desperate before I found out about this vacation, but now I'm starting to panic. I know it's only 3 months away. But in general I still want to get rid of this. It's so depressing to have this at a young age and can't do any activity that would show my feet. Thanks.

Oh I just started applying tea tree oil. What do you think of that? Anything else better?

Even though you are a male, you might want to go get a pedicure... the technician can cut and shape your toenails so that they look great in sandals. She/he can also clean out the dead/extra skin around the nails and on your heals, but you can skip the polish. :jester: The Lamisil will continue to work, don't worry about that.

Go to Cancun and have a great time. You will be worrying more about your nails than anyone else you are with.... they won't even notice or look at your feet!

He has given you the recommended length of treatment but you won't see any improvement until your nails grow out and you know that takes time. ...but you should be able to see some improvement before you go on vacation. good luck

Fungal spores live deep within the nail bed as well as the layers of nail plate. They 'eat' the proteins in the nail plate as 'food' and leave behind a lot of debris that accumulates in the area of separation they have created. Yu should get a pedicure so the nail technician can buff down the thickened nails and clean out all the debris, or as much as possible without causing you pain. If you want to keep the nails looking clean and brighter, you can soak them at home in a mixture of water and 5-minute Polident Denture Cleaner. This will help to brighten the free edge of the nail plate and help to alleviate the discoloration in the nail plate.

Tea Tree Oil can be very drying to the skin, especially if it is already dried out. I would suggest instead that you use a drop of Vinegar at least twice a day. The Lamasil should have killed all the fungal spores by now, but since the toe nails grow at a much slower rate than your fingernails, it can take anywhere from a few months to a full year for the nails to grow in from the matrix and push all the lifted portion off the free edge. Nail growth is determined by your genetics.

The pedicure will help your feet and toes look much better so you should be able to wear sandals on your vacation without feeling 'panic'.

My doctor put me on Lamasil for 4 months, but it's only 14 pills/mo. He only wants me to take 2 250mg tabs a day for each week out of the month. I hope it's just as effective. How are you taking it? In total I'll have 56, but I'm pretty sure he said he'd give me some more if I need it. You may want to check out the generic brand, i got 14 pills for $4 :). I was stoked.

With all that said; how well has it worked for you so far?

I was given 84 tabs. Taken one orally each day in a row until done. So far, I see some improvement. Not as fast as I would like, but I do see some. I went back to the doctors and he said to give it another 6-12 months. Even though I'm off of it, it's still working in the blood stream or wherever it's working. On the nails at the bottom I see some clear looking nails and the yellowing towards the middle/top (where it was originally). But for some reason some of them are still growing/looking thick although clear. The doctor said it had to do with the portion of the top that is thick that is making it look like that. So eventually when they fully grow out, it should look more normal. That's what he said, and that's what I'm hoping. At times I feel like giving up and just killing each nail and having no nails at all. Has anybody ever done that? How would it look to get fake nails put on. LOL. Geez, that's how desparate I am at this point. So sad..........:(

Toe nails grow much slower than fingernails. It can take from 6-12 months for a toenail to completely replace tiself.

The thickened portion of the nail plate is due to the fact that the fungal spores 'eat' the proteins in the nail plate for food. The result is a thickened, discolored and sometimes crumbling nail plate. Please just follow your doctors advice.

As for removing the nail plate and having artificial nails applied, that is not a good idea. Artificial nail products were designed to be applied to a nail plate - ot to ones exposed skin. Doing so can lead to painful allergic reactions. Artificial nail products do not adhere to skin because the skin contains oil and moisture which are a separating medium. The skin will absorb the liquid in the acrylic product and can cause the skin to blister, itch, burn and peel. I don't think you want to leave yourself open to that.

Since you say that the new emerging nail is pink and healthy looking, that should be enough. As more 'new' nail grows in, it will push the damaged portion off the free edge. it just takes time.

Try Vicks, the vaporub stuff...works like a charm...you must put it on at night and continue a month or so...you will start to see a difference....mine is almost all gone and I had a very bad case...had it for many many years...My doctor is the one that gave me the heads up on it...:)
