sorry no one answered. i would have replied sooner but i've been gone.
fluid is a hard battle when they start to progress with this disease. my husband is on spirolactone and lasix. pretty high doses too. he still has fluid really bad. he only has 6 cups fluid a day and low salt intake. they are talking about draining the fluid off soon.... wonder what that's like? hope the meds have worked by now for your hubby. good luck.

Yes. it is really hard and when i think it can't get any worse, it does.
The gold bond medicated lotion helped my hubby the most with the itching, he's kinda got over that for some reason.
They will probably put your husband on lasix next... since the other is not working. meds are really bad for the liver, any time it warns of liver damage don't let him take it without checking with your gastroenterologist or whoever your liver dr is. you don't want this to get any worse. if they think the outlook is good then he needs to take very good care of his liver. if my hubby had quit drinking when they first told him he had cirrhosis i don't think we would be in this situation.
good luck.

i got it at rite aid drug store. your pharmacist could tell you something else that may work if your drug store doesn't have it.
does any body else out there have any advice for fluid buildup???? my husband's feet look like they are going to bust today and they are really hot.

Hi, I just joined the board trying to find some answers myself. My husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis a few years ago. He gets 'swollen' in his stomach often. This is known as ascites and it is fluid buildup. They can do a paracentisis to drain this. Basically it is a plastic needle inserted into the stomach to drain the fluid. My husband's PCP does this in his office with ultrasound guidance to make sure they don't go too far in or puncture anything. If left untreated, the fluid can become infected, so make sure he does get drained soon. My husband is currently taking several medications to help keep the fluid down. He is on Lactulose, furosemide, amiloride, spironolactone and cipro, which he takes three times a week to help fight infection of the ascites.
As for the being cold, make sure his hemoglobin levels are ok. Usually when my husband starts feeling cold when the rest of us are either comfortable or warm, it's a sign that his levels are low. In his case, due to losing blood. At the moment, he is going through that and the doctor does not know where it is going to. I wish you both luck!

i asked them in the hospital - april 8 - to give him a fluid tap. they wouldn't do it. they were really inept i think. he has an appt monday and i will check with his liver dr... maybe he can do it in his office. they do the light thing down your throat there so maybe he can do that too.
i will also go ahead and answer your post in the other message here on this one... about the transplant evaluation.
they had the evaluation set up for 3 appts. some centers will do this in 2 days. they ended up doing his in 2 appts cause he's getting worse. the first appt was at the transplant clinic and several different drs, etc. came in to see him. from financial people, social workers, doctors, etc. then he went to the lab and had a million test done, blood and urine. that was it for the first day. we had this done jan 31. then april 16 was next appt and june was the 3rd appt, but we got the rest done on april 16. he first went to neurocongenative testing, excuse my spelling. they kept him about 2 hours and then also talked to me. then he had pulmonary function testing that lasted about 1/2 hr. checked his breathing and stuff. then he went to the clinic and picked up lab work that was to be done. then he went to the echo lab, wasn't too long in there. then went to lab and they took blood and urine. then had to drive to another building and have dye ran for MRI. what a nightmare it was. by then he was tired and sick. we planned on getting a room and staying the night but he was so sick. i layed his seat all the way back, covered him up, and hauled ass home. took only 3 hours, shortest time yet. I dont' know how long it will be before we hear anything.
oh and about the hemoglobin... while he was in hospital in 2 wks ago his hemoglobin dropped from 8.1 to 7.1 and they gave him 2 units of blood. also gave him alb., sodium, potassium, calcium. some more stuff too i think. he did stop shaking but he was still freezing. never did find out where blood went.
good luck with everything.
