Hello! I am a 51 yr. old healthy Indian male (163 mm, 70 Kgs, play lawn tennis 3 times a week/ walk briskly 3 times a week for 40 minutes). Generally happy go lucky, without financial/ professional or personal tensions. no serious illness till date but for athelete's bronco asthma demanding a puff of Serobid before playing tennis.

Alcohol consumption history- have been consuming alcohol for last 30 years. First 20 years 3-4 times a week 5/6 large (50 ml.) drinks. Last 10 years 1-2 times 4/5 large drinks.

Smoking history- smoker for last 33 years. Avg.10-12 cigarettes/ day for first 23 years. Gave up for 3 years. Lately been smoking 7-8 cigarettes per day for last 5 years.

Food habits- Rather healthy food with very little fat/oil, sugars or red meats.

Problem - For last 1 year or so whenever I drink usual 4-5 large drinks of Whiskey/ Vodka etc., even after sleeping well I wake up with puffed up face and eyes and more often than not develop some slight FEVER that lasts for a day or two. This ofcourse is coupled with slight bodyache and fatigue etc. Mostly after such a drinking session on friday night the following Saturday and Sunday are more or less ruined. As it is becoming rather regular I am worried whether i have some liver or similar problem. Please advise the possible diagnosis and suggest the tests I should undergo to establish the problem for treatment.

Thank you

Hi Prashant:

One of the symptoms for liver malfunction, as you probably know, is water retention. So it could very well be that your liver is not processing alcohol as it did. I am no expert, but this is my opinion.

I would suggest you do a liver flush - you can find many things at the health food shop. Milk thistle is a remedy I trust. You can take a few bottles of the liquid to cleanse the liver and have a glass of fresh vegetable juice daily. But of course, you will need to curb on your alcohol consumption.

There are many things you can do naturally to keep the liver functioning, but the above would be a good start.

Best,

Rajk
