my dad is 71 and a diabetic, he takes insulin twice a day now, he was recently told its not if but when he will have to have dialyses, as his kidney function has dropped from 20% to 12.

i was just wondering, its been 3 months since i had a info session and told he may have to have dialyses, and 2 days before he was due to find out the doctor cancled his appointment and postponed it by 2 months, which i am taking as a good sign other wise they would have got him to see another doctor.

anyway, he was retaining allot of fluid, and the doctors gave him the tablets to take which made him urinate allot more and he lost i think it was 15 if not more kilos, so i was just wondering, if he isn't carrying that fluid any more, and he says he feels ok, is it possible is kidney function improved at all?.

My husbands doctor said that when kidney function drops to 15% it is time for dialysis. There are a lot of things that you can do to improve the way he feels.Limit fluids to about 6 cups a day.The kidneys are what gets rid of the fluids and if they aren't doing their job then you have to help them by not having as much liquid to get rid of.Too much fluid can cause congestive heart failure.Limit salt also. You might want to go online and check out the renal diets.
