my 8 yr old has scid reflux symptoms. they used to be about 40 episodes/day but much less now with regular chiropractic care and reduction of dairy in her diet.
the pediatrician wanted her to take meds but I was concerned about long term side effects. I still think diet plays a big part in reflux symptoms like mucus in the throat and food coming back up with burning sensation.
any suggestions?

hi -

i had acid reflux at a very young, too - 3rd grade, as early as i can remember it.

anyways, i did notice it was really awful after eating those wonderful gov't school lunches. and when i think back on it, what did i always get? fried foods - french fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, etc. oh, and ketchup (for the fries, of course).

i'd say dairy is a good food to cut, b/c i've heard something about foods high in calcium causing problems. but, think also about acidic foods like fried foods, foods with lots of tomatoes, etc. juice, carbonated drinks, caffeine (chocolate!!), etc. can infame acid reflux as well. also, make sure your kid isn't eating and then taking a nap or going off to bed - laying down after eating just lets gravity exacerbate the problem.

one more thing: i am a runner and experience "runner's reflux" a lot - i have to be careful about what i eat and drink before my runs. so, if your kid is at all physically active - make sure food isn't going in right before playing sports, or moderate physical activity.

i would try some things of that nature before resorting to meds, and see if it brings any relief. i stopped taking meds a few years back and have been ok managing my reflux.

good luck! ;)
