I have a 5 week old baby boy he has been throwing up off and on since birth so I took him to the Doctor's they say he has acid reflux or he won't beable to have cow's milk (doctor said formula has the same stuff that cow's milk has in it). But I got online and got looking he has all the symptoms of Acid Reflux. He constantly crying what can I do for him? My sister said that she had a friend and her daughter had it and the deluted Pepto Bismol down and that helped for a little while until the doctor could give her something. She also said that the little girl was on medication for about a month or two and now she is fine. So has anybody else gave there kids deluted down pepto bismol or have they heard of it being done?:( He is not getting much sleep at all unless he is in his carseat.

DS had reflux, as did his cousin and both of them were prescribed zantac by the pediatrician. Cousin said she had a completely different baby. If your doctor isn't taking your child's symptoms seriously, IMO, find another one. As for the pepto -- I don't think I'd try it, especially on a child so little.

I do not think that you should give a child, especially one so young, Pepto Bismol. Not only does it say on the bottle it should not be used in children under the age of 12, it is not really meant to treat acid reflux. The main ingredient in Pepto Bismol is bismuth subsalicylate (which is from the same family as acetylsalicylic acid/aspirin) which in rare cases can cause Reyes Syndrome in children.

From what I looked up it says Gastroesophageal Reflux is very common in infants - it is just another name for "spitting up." It also says in more severe cases there are treatment options, so you should ask your doctor for more information.

My daughter had this spitting up/reflux from she was 2 weeks old to about 1 year old.. she outgrew it with no med, so long as the baby is healthy and gaining weight, it is not serious.... some babies are more prone than others to have this....it never caused her any difficulties or uncomfort. she is now a healthy 5 year old . Just be patient it will get better and i would not give her anything unless the doctor says it is needed.
