Hi Yall! I finally got my biopsy done yesterday. I had to spend the night in the VA hospital, because I live more than 50 miles away. The Dr used a local anesthesia and I didn't feel a thing, he even showed me my liver sample (I was told after the procedure that I had the A-Team) The only problem I had was about 15 hours later at 1:30am when I got indigestion (really bad) I'd eaten supper about 7 1/2 hours earlier (I was starving and I was thinking the next time I have a biopsy, I'll sneak some food in) anyway the Dr was called twice and came in to check on me at 3am, by then I'd already taken an antacid and my stomach had already settled. I was skeptical about the VA treating me, but not anymore. I'd like to salute this Dr for caring enough to go out in the cold and foggy morning to check on me...I guess the moral of this story is if you get a biopsy stay on liquids, no matter how hungry you get...believe me, I thought I was having a heart attack, even though, I knew it was indigestion, it hurt that bad...Thanks...

Hey! I;m really glad that all went well for you. Your lucky to have such a caring physician. That was actually one of my main concerns when I realized I was infected. I too lucked out. I saw my specialist for the first time yesterday and I couldnt be more pleased with him.
If you dont mind I'd like to ask you (or anyone else who can answer) a couple of questions regarding the biospsy. My doctor andI discussed so much that I forgot to ask a few things.
My biopsy is Tuesday morning. Tuesday evening I have a final exam in a chemistry class that I absolutely cannot miss. Do you think this will be a problem? I mean, how did you feel several hours after the procedure? How was the pain? Besides the local anestetic, were you given anything for pain?
I've heard conflicting report about biopsies. Some say it is no biggie, and others have said that it feels like soemone has hit them in the chest with a baseball bat.
Also, you said that you were told after the procedure that you were on the A-Team or soemthing. What is that? Does the doctor get the results of the biopsy immediately after the surgery or is the sample sent away for analysis?
Thanks alot.

Hi Rayralph, I think if they just give you a local, you should be alright to take a test. I know for at least 6 hours you have to stay on bed rest (maybe longer) This is to make sure there's no more bleeding...Now the A-Team was just a phrase from an old TV show. I guess your young and never heard of this show, but they're on TV Land (I think) The Dr and Nurse (mostly Dr) are experts at doing biopsy procedures...I hope this helps...Good luck on both biopsy and exam...

Ralph-
when I went for my biopcy,I was given nothing, no local nothing, the specilist doing the biopcy said that they want people to Not have the local or pain meds as they want to know right away if there is somthing wrong.
I am not tryng to scare you here, but its a big, large intimidating needle, the good news is that it is litteraly shot into you in a split second, therefore most do not feel a thing.
I was one in tens of thousands that things did not go good for, all my internal organs seemed to have constricted into a spasam, it took three attempts to get the sample, I was in so much pain after the second shot I could not even speak to say QUIT, but had I quit I would just had to do it all over again in a couple of weeks.
If or I should say when I go in again for an biopcy,
I WILL ask for a local and a seditive with a pain killer on stand by, it is my opinion that the local would be a good thing, [as with the seditive haha].
The odds are in your favor for an complete painless easy biopcy, most I know that had a biopcy done said it was over before they thought it was going to start, they make you lay on your biopcy side for several hours, so you will have to write that test, ha ha.
Somtimes you hear stuff that make it seem frightning, but it is really not a bad thing to go though, and it is a very important tool to see what stage your at and/or if you might decide for treatment.
Here is hoping that it will be a "tip toe though the tulips" for you, be well.
Meanjean-
Glad it went good for you and you found a good doc, I never heard about the indigestion problem before, but good advice on doing what they tell you to do before you have an biopcy, and glad all is well.
Well, just had mine done today. It wasnt too bad. after the local wore off the pain got pretty bad. I mean, real bad. Everytime I took a breath it felt like I ws getting kicked in the ribs and stabbed in the gut. The original plan was to do this without painkillers. That plan was quickly scratched. A Tylenol 4 didnt help at all so I got a nice shot pof demerol in the butt. That did the trick.
6 hours after the procedure I feel fine. I've eaten twice and so far no indigestion problems and just a very slight discomfort. The demerol might still be working on me though.
I made it to my final exam, btw! Woo hoo! 2 down, 2 to go.

Rayralph-
glad the biopcy went reasonally well, gotta love that demerol when in pain huh, that stuff works great, When I go in next time I am gonna ask for a shot first haha, heck they could cut off my leg if they wanted to when the give me one of those shots,I cannot beleive I went though that first biopcy with no local, seditives or pain killers
Also glad you made it to your test, hope you did well, quite a day full for you huh,
be well-
here's an interesting thought (well, interesting to me, anyway): i, like lost 1, was one of the few people who had a bad reaction to the biopsy. Also like lost 1, i had no pain killers or anesthesia, thinking this would ensure a quicker, simpler recovery.
I wonder if NOT getting medicated actually worsened my body's reactions, and impeded recovery, rather than helping? i want another biopsy someday--yes, the information was definitely worth the discomfort-- and i believe i'll ask for whatever dope they have next time. being a hero in my case meant missing work for two days, and after that wasting a weekend recovering. stupid.
live and learn.
peace,
sean

Sean-
I definataly agree, I was wound up like a coil spring going in, had I been well relaxed, [medicated],
I believe that my organs and I would have been relaxed and what happened to me - would not have happened.
be well-
I haven't gone for my biopsy yet, but I am going in January of 2003. I'm a little nervous, but my doctor said that it is pretty much painless. I will keep that in mind to just stay on liquids for that day though.
Thanks for the info!
