The walking vest was waiting for me when i got home from town this morning and i had to try it out on a walk. If the maiden walk is any indication, its going to be a good additon to daily walks. It's comfortable to wear and even under a windbreaker and over a long sleeve t shirt i didn't get too warm. I started with the 4 lbs. it came with and could feel the extra effort during the walk. I was also walking into a headwind and in sand, so i got plenty of extra umpf today. It's a bit big, but the straps cinced it up fine. If by some changce i get smaller i can take it in on the sewing machine or sell it and get a smaller one. The weights are metal bars, so i think i'll be able too imoprovise when i want to add more weight.
It came with 2 cd's, but i haven't looked at them yet. I think one is music and the other an indoor workout. I'll let you know how they are when i listen/watch them. Oh..it has a pocket on the back that you can put a cd or mp3 player in, i was happy to see that since i listen to music when walking alone.
Have a good weekend..take care...phyllis

Phylwill-That's great! What is the material like? is it cotton, or a nylon type? As you know I have the x2vest and it is very heavy nylon like material , like really heavy. No way that if you put the total 12 pounds in that it came with it would not sag, or wear out or tear any part of it. That being said, it is totally not breathable. But, is is not a vest but more like a tunic???I think that is what it would be called, it has no sides, just a front and back section, it slips over your head and you cinch it around with the velcro belt. So, in a way it is breathable because sides are open, but you sweat under it because you get warm and there is no way for the heat to release from your body like the small part of your back.
I am going to keep the one that I have but really am wondering how it would ever work on a mildly warm day let alone a warm or hot day. I will be interested to hear how the WalkVest does for you.
Does it seem really durable??

Hi OB...the vest is made of a heavy cotton fabric, with a netlike fabric inserts on the sided for air circulation. When its cinched up snug there is still room for air too move above the weights, which rest on the hips front and back. I think the way its designed will hold up well. I looks more like a vest you'd wear than the one i ordered first, which like yours, went over the head and fastened with velcro straps. I don't think i'll have a heat problem until it gets hot and humid out, like i know it will. If it get to toasty, i won't wear it. I'll still ahve my poles for that little bit of extra. I don't think you have the humidity problem where you live.
A friend of ours was over for supper and i showed him the weights it came with. He said he had some metal bars about the same width that he'd cut to size for me. i don't know if it will be exact ly .5 lbs. or 1lb., but it will give me the extra weights to add in when needed wiothout the expense of ordering them.
This is how the info that came with it said to add weight...When you need a greater challenge and don't want to exercise MORE add more weight, 2 lbs, at a time. I guess that means work harder in the same amount of time and get the same benefits.
I am so glad you got the good news you did...did you and your husband (don't know if you have one) go out and celebrate? great news like that deserves a night out. talk to ya soon...take care...phyllis

I've never heard of this phylw. I walk with a small backpack containing a 5 lb weight. I agree with you on feeling the weight. I started out with 10 pounds (suggested by my naturopath) and felt it in my knees and feet! It was hurting. Thought I better start out gradually so I reduced it to 5lbs. I love how I can feel all my back muscles working. Amazing!
Good luck with your vest.

Hi Peppurr, i learned abou the walking vest from reading about them, seeing them on tv and from a couple of threads that we had a couple months back. I used a backpack with a weight off and on, but when i learned about the vest decided it would probably be the best, safest way to get the extra weight resistance. The one i have now that i ordered online is the Debbie Rocker walk vest. The first one was way to thick a fabric for wearing during hot humid IL summers, so i sent it back. This one is going to be much cooler to wear and its made of washable cotton. Do you have any tips to share about using the vest/backpack? I'll stick with the 4 lbs. for now and add more when they become unoticable.
Hi OB...I'm so glad you and your husband had a nice evening out. Are you going to buy walking poles or make your own? if you can find 2 cross country ski poles they are great to use. Just cut the baskets off and cut the poles to a length from a 90 degree bend in your elbow to the ground. Add rubber tips and off you go. Broom handles cut to the rioght length would work too. I have a pair of regular walking poles we got at walmart, but prefer the bamboo ski poles. Let me know when you get them and i'll give the nutshell version of how to use them or you can look up walking poles and get the scooop. Since i've been walking in the fields with the dogs i haven't been using mine, but when i start walking in town with a friend i'll use them. In the fields they get caught on things.
We have a sunny day here and when the wind lays i'll take the dogs for a walk...wearing the vest. Have a good weekend..take care...phyllis

No. No tips from me other than graduating the weight. I've been walking with 5 lbs for about 6 months. I feel really good after walking with that amount - muscles, knees and feet. I'm going to add another 2 lb weight one of these days.
Thanks for the info on your vest. I just might look into it for the summer. It sounds like the weight would be more evenly distributed.

Hi Pepper... wanted to tell you that if you do order a vest get a smaller size than you think you need, they run big. I was going to send it back and get a smaller size, but the price has gone up, so i altered it myself. I threw it in the washer and dryer first thinking it would shrink, but it didn't which surprized me since it 100% cotton. It's still a bit bigger that i need, but now the waist strap hits the right spot and its not quite as long. It felt ok before, but now its a much better fit.
I also wanted to tell you and OB that i did the dvd and its on the same order as the Leslie Sanson walking videos. The audio cd is basically her talking and background music with the right beat, which i had trouble hearing over her voice. All in all i'm glad i got it...take care...phyllis

Hi there,
Thankyou for your quick response, I really want to buy the walkvest with additional weights. I am a size 32 in waist, and my chest size is about a 36, I am 5 feet 10 inches and large boned, do you think that a large vest would be good enough. I was wondering weather I should buy a walkvest from e bay or from walkvest.com, I am from montreal, canada. I just don't want to pay more for nothing. I am using a back pack with a five pound weight and I try to walk up the stairs every second day. I heard that it builds spine density.
Could you please give me your input phyllis.

Hi indersonu...when i ordered mine i went by what they said and got a large, it's too big, so i altered it on the sewing machine. I shortend the length and am still deciding if i want to take up the shoulders a bit too. What i'd do is order 2 sizes and return the one that doesn't fit, so you don't have to make any alterations like i did. The size you think you need and and a smaller size. You're taller than me so the length wouldn't be a problem for you. I am short waisted. The sizes goes by dress size, and they must use really big dresses to go by...hahah. If you go to the site there is a customer service number..maybe you could call them and get a better idea of what size to get.
I've been wearing it most days for over a week now and really like it. I use it during walks and wear it around the house while doing housework. Its really a nice additon when i can't get outside and do walking videos. I've noticed that after wearing it for a while i forget its on, i don't know if thats a sign for adding more weight or thats its comfortable to wear. If you decide to get one it will be nice to compare notes.
Take care...phyllis

Hi there,
I just ordered a large walkvest, it came up to about eighty dollars with the shipping price added. I would like to buy the additional weights but the customer service said that they won't have the additional weights for a few months. lol. I will let you know when I receive my walkvest.
Thanks a bunch for a prompt response.
