I'm new to the group. My son is 14 and has daily chronic migraines. He's had this one everyday for 5 weeks. He has had them since he was 6. Sometimes they are better, and sometimes worse. This one seems to be the worse he's had in a long time. The weather affects him and spring is hard on him with all the wind and barametric pressure changes. His doctor added Lyrica about 3 weeks ago and has increased the dosage twice up to 300mg daily and still it's even lessening the headache any. Has anyone tried Lyrica for preventing migraines. If so did it cause them to be worse? We are considering an occipital nerve block. Does anyone know anything about that type of treatment? Thanks.

Hi Pam, sorry your son is suffering with migraines. I was diagonsed with them about 17 years ago. I don't know alot about Lyrica except that I was told it can cause weight gain. Thats all I know! I was never put on it for migraines. I use Topamax for a preventative and Maxalt and Fiorinal with Codeine for rescue meds.
Everyone's triggers are different, barametric pressure changes are common triggers, :( another for me is ice cream, and sleep pattern changes.
I never did the occipital nerve block either. Best of luck to you both.

Lori,
He was on Topamax for about 8 months. It helped in the beginning but once the weather changed in fall it seemed to no longer be effective. His doctor increased the dosage twice and side effects became intolerable and it didn't help either so we stopped it. I think less sleep does affect him. He always does better when he can sleep late. I'm going to talk to his doctor about something to help him sleep.
Pam
