There can be indications of the condition on fundus (back of the eye) examination but that is not adequate. ON can be caused by many things such as infection, a tumour, MS or certain medications. There is a possibility that a sinus infection could spread to the optic nerve. However, it really needs proper diagnosis by a neuro-ophthalmologist. kelmil 04-05-2008, 09:51 PM Hi - I'm new to this forum. Looking for more info on ON. I had an attack of ON in December of 2006 from which I have not recovered my sight. It followed a severe sinus infection. I told 3 doctors this and they all poo-poohed the idea but I stand by it firmly. I had severe pain above and aroun the affected eye prior to the visual changes and sinus drainage the likes of which I'd never seen. I hope you will recover. I'm still hoping but it looks less likely as time goes by. brianmf 04-06-2008, 05:11 AM Hi - I'm new to this forum. Looking for more info on ON. Did you have an MRI scan when the blurred vision first occurred? Did you see a neuro-ophthalmologist? Did you have any other diagnostic tests? You could well be right in assuming that the sinus infection was the root of the problem but, without proper diagnosis, you can't be sure. jdn5764 04-06-2008, 07:30 AM I have pain around my eye, in the tissues that run along side my nose. The vision is odd. I have bouts where it seems that the vision is blocked off. It wasn't like that prior to the sinus pain. And it feels as if the vision in that eye has gotten weaker. I hope it improves as its the only eye that I've got. Worried sick now. Got ENT appointment on Thursday see what he says. Bearygood 05-10-2008, 12:47 AM Brian is right. If the dx is really Optic Neuritis, neurological involvement should be investigated if there is no other "handy" explanation. A good ophthalmologist will know if a referral to a neuro-ophthalmologist is necessary. To investigate further, there should be an MRI of the brain AND the orbits (with and without contrast). I've seen too many ON patients whose doctors order a brain MRI but not one of the orbits -- it only adds about 15 minutes to the procedure. |
