I run a small nursing home. One of my residents has balance disturbance. He has been checked out - no middle ear pathology or ear infection etc.
His son has mentioned to me that there is something that the physiotherapists can do called the Petley manouve. I have never heard of this and even Google gives up no results.
Can anyone help please?

google "dizzy morning" and check out cnn link. I've experienced quick dizzy/spinning precipitated by turning my head in bed in the morning. Getting out of bed the dizziness persists a bit before diminishing. BVVP or some similar acronym starting with Benign seems to the condition afflicting me. It is caused by calcium carbonate particulates breakine loose and entering the inner ear, thereby disturbing balance. The description says head movement in bed in the morning causes sudden dizziness which recedes but doesn't disappear completely for several minutes if you get out of bed. Hope this helps.

The therapy for benign peroxismal positional vertigo is known as the "Epley" maneuver... not "Petley".

Be aware though, that there can be other causes of imbalance besides ear problems. My MIL was very unbalanced. We had her checked for ear problems, but she actually had neuropathy of the feet which caused her to not feel solid contact with the ground. She was completely unaware that she had reduced feeling in her feet.

My husband has had this for a long time. Sometimes there's a couple of years between attacks, sometimes just months. His is diagnosed as Benign Positional Vertigo and all he can do is take medication and lie still for 3 or 4 days until it passes. I know there is a procedure that can be done, but I would want it done by someone well versed in it and since this is happening as I post - on a weekend - I'm pretty limited in where I could go and how I could even get him in the car to go somewhere. The medication that was prescribed was Antivert, but it is expensive and there is an OTC form of it. A pharmacist would know what it is.

1st I'd have your patients B-12 checked out.. low levels of B-12 can cause imbalance problems and is rather common in the elderly..

2nd there is something called adult onset hydrocephalus .. This can cause an array of problems one of them including gait issues..
