I'm always amazed at the hard work we all do to help and keep our bones strong. It makes me wonder what exactly we are doing is doing the most good. Some of us are taking the osteo drugs, some strontium and some nothing. But the one thing we are all doing is taking an assortment of supplements, eating a good diet and getting plenty of exercise. Is it a combination of all the above or is it one thing that is doing more good than some of the others? When we are trying so many things at once its hard to pinpoint what is working, what is helping and what is doing very little.

I've been taking strontium for going on 2 years and feel it's doing what it's supposed to do, but i've also made efforts to get more dietary calcium, increased the amount of exercise i do, and started new supplements. I'd like to credit the strontium with the improvements, but it could also be from the other changes i've made. Have all of you thought the same thing or is it my overactice mind thinking too much? Have a good day...take care, phyllis

Good point, Phylwill; it may well be the combination of things as opposed to just "the drugs" or "the supplements. I recently saw a naturopath about this, and he told me the most important thing for me was Vitamin K plus Pilates exercises 3X/week. I had never done Pilates until 18 months ago, and I just started K last fall. Of course, I'll never know if I've improved or not because I've decided not to have any more DEXA scans. But knowing strontium has helped you keeps me thinking positive thoughts that my BMD is slowly increasing. Thanks for sharing!

Good Points. I sure hope it's a combination of things I"m doing since I'm not taking any medication. Luckily when I just fracture my ankle I am in a cam walker and can still walk around, otherwise I couldn't get any weight bearing exercise. I guess we should be preparing for possible bone loss lots earlier like 20 years earlier with getting enough calcium, taking supplements, and exercise, etc.,

Good post Phylwill! I'm banking on a combination too.

I have to say I'm a little nervous about the Strontium. I'm just hoping it works.
When I was diagnosed with osteopenia I took calcium by AOR (same as my Strontium). I paid a good price for this Ca - it was apparently derived from Australian Bovine.
I took it faithfully for 2 yrs and had another bone scan. I had worsened to osteoporosis in my spine.

So then I saw a Naturopath and now, I'm on the Strontium, different Ca with magnesium and extra Vit D. I too have a better diet and more exercize. I did try Fosamax and for many reasons quit.

Now, I'm just hoping.

Starfish - I do pilates as well. I have found a physiotherapist's office who conducts pilates geared towards osteoporosis. I had taken pilates elsewhere for a few years and found that I was doing things that I shouldn't have been. So....be careful.

Peppurr: thanks for the caution; I appreciate the concern we have for each other on this board. This may sound foolish, but when I'm doing an exercise that I know is targeting the spine, I visualize the bones growing stronger. I now have back muscle definition (which I never had before). When I received the latest DEXA result, with a drop of 6% despite growth hormone Tx, I had to get some kind of therapy to keep me from going "off the deep end". So I chose visulization therapy and found a wonderful practitioner to facilitate that. I suppose that, coupled with my naturopath's instructions to do Pitates 3x/wk (plus the stubborn/headstrong streak I was born with), leads me to just go with the regular classes. I find that if you get good at doing the "imprint" move, it's protective of your lower back.
