My doctor told me I have chronic sinusitis which she judged from an MRI. My GP gave me an antibiotic to clear it up, but if it is chronic do I need to take an antibiotic. Won't it just come back anyways? I don't have the nose dripping problem and my throat is fine, but my face feels like it's going to fall off sometimes it hurts so bad.
Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. I've read that fibro sufferers tend to have sinusitis so I was hoping to get some feed back from y'all. I take Claritin-D everyday and I just started using a saline nose spray.

hi kiddo,
do the antibiotics. yes it will probably come back. ergo the work chronic. with this condition infection is a concern. the mri does show this. the machine told on me too. fortunatly mine is mild. the saline spray will help alot. thanks for reminding me it is the season to go buy more. remember chronic just means it will happen again. doesn't say how often so it could be once a year. you never know.
peace,

I agree with BLLady.. you need to take the antibiotics to keep it from getting worse than it already is. I'm glad you don't have drip problems. I do, and it drives me crazy because it tickles my throat and makes me cough and gag a lot. I would recomend the rhino horn nasal washing though. I use it and it helps keep my sinuses clearer than anything I know of. It is a horn shaped device that you fill with warm salt water (iodine free salt), and rinse out the nasals through your nostrils. It's very easy to use, and you can usually find it in the pharmacy of larger stores like a Walmart. I don't know how to draw a picture of what it looks like any better that this, sorry. You should be able to do a search and find it though. Oh, and thanks for joining us.. great group of folks here. :D

Sherryrenee, you're where my son is right now only the doc didn't give him the antibiotic and I'm about to scream with it all. Every day he comes in from college, he can hardly think long enough to do his work and to do the college homework. The last thing I gave him to try was the icyhot stick. He's been raised not to whine so he goes into that doc's office saying one thing--sinus pain. He doesn't report the headaches that are killing him and they don't ask, has your head been hurting? So they give him singulaire expecting that to do the trick... right. I'd sure take the antibiotic and hope with me that they will give my son the same.
I have chronic sinusitis, too, and have since the early 90's. The flonase and the sinus washes and vitamins and asthma medicines do help, I think; but only after the infection is cleared. All that stuff makes it harder for the infection to wreak such havoc or something. But if you don't want that antibiotic, can you send it here? Feel better!

I fought the sinusitis problem for a couple years, and my doc always gave me an atibiotic. She was however getting very concerned why suddenly I was having such a problem and had me do a CTscan of my sinus'. Which fortunately came out negative. So she has me take an OTC Loratidine 10mg. everyday and I did the OTC phenylephrine everyday for a long time ( 2-3 mo.s). Then my friend told me about the nettipot sinucleanse. Instead of a horn, it looks like an aladins lamp and there is one that looks like a teapot. I use it almost everyday and it really seems to help. It comes with a bunch of saline packets, you can get them at Walgreens, Target or other pharmacys.
Just wanted to pass something along, not intending to scare anyone. I have a friend who had tremendous sinus problems and was seeing and ENT for them and she just couldn't get rid of the infection. Her ENT drilled down behind her eye and put in a drain and everything and it worked for awhile but the tremendous headaches returned etc. He would even go behind her eye and drain her sinus'. Finally after the drain shunt collapsed and she just couldn't take the pain any longer they did surgery. It is kind of gross but they cut in the hairline and peeled down her face and discovered the bone over her eyes, you know where the eyebrows are was infected. Major surgery for her but she has never been so relieved. Her doc was very shocked to see so much infection in the bone and I guess it is rare.
Again I don't want anyone to think they have this problem but if you fight sinus headache and pain for a couple years and it continually gets worse and your seeing a specialist, then it is time to get in there and get something done. No one should suffer from sinus problems continually, see an ENT and get it checked out.

Well now, my older brother had sinusitus for years and years, and no antibiotic managed to get it under control. He cured his with a very drastic method. For two weeks ( I believe that's the correct time) he consumed NOTHING but lemon water (no sugar) laced with cayene pepper. He lost a lot of weight in the process, but it finally knocked the infection completely out. I dont' have the willpower or intestinal fortitude to even think about trying this, but it worked for him.

Whoa, Ishla, that's quite unusual, but I am glad it worked for him. And dang, Glojer, let's hope your friend was one of a kind. What a mess! My son's doc office called and said they were referring him to an ent and I said "great, but I can't going into that ent's office without us having first at least tried an antibiotic; I have two kids who got sick at the same time--the one who got the antibiotic got better". SO finally, they gave him one of those quick working packs of antibiotics. I'll get him to the ent for the thorough checkout, but this kid is the one that makes me not give up trying for solutions... he has several fm-like symptoms and it scares me.

baserocker, good for you taking care of that boy. That's what we moms do, you gotta fight for them all the time. And yes I hope you are right, I hope my friend is the only one with that problem, boy it was really a bad deal.

I've always suffered from sinus problems. Noticed several folks suggested the saline washes...netipot and similar. These are great methods for irrigating out the sinuses. Doing this regularly can relieve so much pain and pressure. The wash actually goes into the sinus cavities and rinses them out. Saline spray works well to wash out the nasal passage and to provide moisture but you won't get the effect of a complete rinse. I've never used a neti-pot or prepackaged saline mixtures, but have always made my own using warm water and salt. Preferably sea salt, but I use table salt if I have to. Have to make sure it's not too salty (will burn). Just mix into a cup, put my nose in, suck up the water solution through my nose, spit out my mouth. It's pretty gross and definitely not very lady like, but it works. It's hard at first getting used to it as some folks feel like they're drowning. Got to get the coordination down. I've been doing this since I was a little girl and has gotten me through many infections. I've just started doing this on a more daily basis (2-3 x's / day) and it's helping tremendously with my allergies. Also the whole family (extended family not just household) got a terrible cold that moved to everyone's chest (put our neighbor in the hospital) and I'm the only one that suffered the least when usually I get the sickest. It never settled in my chest. If you can't bear the thought of making your own solution and just sucking it up, then try the neti-pot or something similar and the pre-packaged saline. This can really help those suffering from chronic sinus problems.

I think I'll try the neti-pot. I'm not brave enough to suck it up my nose. I'm so uncoordinated I probably would almost drown myself! My friend tried the pot and said it's fantastic. I had a massage yesterday and she worked on the trigger points in my face and I have no face pain today. I need to start doing my own trigger point therapy when I'm at home. Thanks for all of the comments! I'm still reluctant about the antibiotic, and my mom thinks I'm an idiot for not taking it but I'm so sick of pills right now. I have an appt for acupuncture today and I think I will bring up the sinusitis.

The facial massage sounds wonderful. Sounds like it was able to open up some areas and relieve congestion. Please go get yourself a net-pot while you're out. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll feel. Totally understand being hesitant about sniffing the water right up. My youngest sister never got the coordination down and I nearly passed out watching her try to suck down a cup of water the other day. Some people just need the neti-pot (or something similar to it).

just started with sinus infections the past 3 months and nothing seems to help. Had antibiotics and flushes, nasonex spray. Still have the headaches, runny nose and aweful mucous, runny eyes...I've never had these problems before I am 55 what the heck happened...

girsie, welcome to the board. I live in what docs around here call the sinusitis capitol of world. I grew up here with no problems what so ever. Then when I was pregnant with my second child I had the itchy burning eyes etc. We moved that year to an older home with lots of trees and foliage. Don't know if it was just the hormone change in my body, something that was in my yard or area or a combination but I have had sinus problems every since. About two three years ago they started to get bad. I am 59 that seems to be a coincidence. Do you also have fibro and do you take medication that may lower your immune system. I'm sure that is why mine has the upper hand with me sometimes.
