View Full Version : Really weird side (?)

Here's a good one.....

Hubby worked all day yesterday, claimed he didn't twist his ankle in any way, actually had a mild day of walking.

He met me at my sons game. Told me his ankle was hurting. The bleachers are concrete and about 5 solid steps. He did go up and down them a few times as his sister, his mom and my dad came during the game so he got up to greet them . We were all going out for my birthday. When the game was done we had to walk about the length of a football field to the car, he said he can barely walk without it hurting.

We got to the restaurant and he HAD to sit down. They insisted we wait and he finally said NO, I have to sit down and he looked pale...well, I'm a b-i-t-c-h when it comes to my husband or kids being sick...so I told the manager "NO, he needs to sit down now where do you want him to sit NOW!!!" See ya'all thought I was sweet, huh?

He limped trying to get his food (his Mom chose a buffet restaurant, duh-ha), I finally helped him. He ate a little bit then said he's been feverish since the end of the game. He had on undershirt, shirt and jacket. He kept taking it on, off, on off. His ankle kept getting worse........UNBELIEVABLE--he actually asked me for some Advil!!!!!!!!

I knew he was hurting for 2 reasons...1, he asked me for Advil and TOOK it...and 2 not only was it my birthday but it's also our anniversary. He's usually really good about it. He finally said "I have to go home, really I do" He's SUCH a stubborn cuss and insisted he drive his own car home (we had 6 cars there)...everyone jumped up to offer him a ride home but he insisted so his brother followed him home.

When I got home 1 hour later he was in the bathroom(which is raised one step) and couldn't get out. Said his ankle hurt so bad he couldn't stand up to pee. He couldn't stand on it at all. I helped him to the bed and asked how did he get in there? He said he crawled and kind of laughed. I thought he was joking.

He took 2 more Advil and he sweated off and on all night. Said he had body aches too. About 2am in the morning I woke up, looked at the foot of the bed and...are ya ready for this...

HE'S CRAWLING ON HIS HANDS AND KNEES TO THE BATHROOM!!!

I could NOT believe it. He didn't want to wake me to help him. He said don't get up and crawled all the way back. He soaked 3 shirts but didn't want any sweatpants.

This morning he said it was sore but could walk on it, insisted on going to work (the idiot) and the fever was gone. The only thing we can think of is: years ago, in his teens---he was in a bad motorcycle accident and crushed that ankle. They said he'd never walked and he was stubborn enough to prove them wrong. It hurt for years but hasn't flared up in over 10-15 years, why now?

So.....what do you all make of that??????????????? He kept saying "is this a side, what the (don't want to tell you what he said)?"
Told him I would consult the Treament Experts in the morning. Another one to add on for the doc question sheet.

It is a known fact that interferon can "soften" bones and can cause osteoporosis. I am guessing that the interferon has struck in an area of vulnerability and may be causing the pain.

Your husband should insist on an assessment of this ankle by an osteo (bone) specialist. It would be a terrible thing to lose the ankle after all that effort and time.

I have an article on the hcop website regarding this happening. You might need it to show the treating physician. While this side effect is not common (that we know of), it could cause permanent damage if left unchecked.

I hope this helps,

thanbey

Sounds like gout to me. Its extremely painful and if he has a joint injury to that ankle the riba/intf might be aggravating it.

My husband has gout and like yours, won't do anything unless he is in extreme pain and that's how I know its the gout acting up. Don't let anybody tell you its only in the toe. My hubby gets it in knees, ankles, toes and wrist (ex football player). Its so painful he ends up on crutches during a major attack but it comes on like you described, a soreness at first, then horrific pain where he can't walk...period. It got so bad he did go to the doc and even a specialist and was put on anti inflams and allpurinal and indocine.

Have the doctor check his uric acid levels. These are elevated during an attack. Just a thought..........

I've studied gout as much as the HCV http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Nothing like a cranky man!!!

Take Care

sorry to hear about the ankle.I just finished treatment.I broke my left hand about 25 years ago.never bothered me until treatment.I could always tell I was in for a rough week when my hand started to hurt.Since I finished treatment it hasn't bothered me.I think the tx inflames old injuries,at least in my case.

Sounds very similiar to what I've been dealing with off and on since 48 weeks of Combo ended 1one and a half years ago!I went thru horific pain in my feet almost immediatly after treatment ended; had Uric Acid levels checked and they were within normal range, Drs, did say tho that Gout could be the cause even tho Uric Acid wasn't elevated. Lived on Indomeythacin(anti-inflam) for almost a year; some days it helped ,some it didn't. Explored other avenues in the Arthritis field, had RA factor checked saw a Reumatologist and varied other specialists, to no avail...Last Specialist said that some people are just suceptble to this stuff, what a bunch of *^$@!!!!
I believe this stuff is all related to the treatment; trying to get Drs. to understand this is quite a task .... Two months ago I had something similiar happen to me (Husbands' foot) ,was at work ,concrete floor ,work boots when all of a sudden my left foot near the small toe area started to hurt; within 2 hours I could no longer walk!! Next day I was on cruthes after seeing Dr.. Had Uric Acid levels checked for the 200th time plus x-rays; all were normal.Lasted 4 days and then went away.
My GP now suggests some form of orthopedic shoes; I'd like to put a pair of these lovely shoes you know where!!!!! Dragonslayer.......

Hi Dragonslayer,

So what you're saying is you never had a problem up until treatment? Are you still on treatment?

Hubby is only on shot #5 and I'm worried this will happen the further along he gets on treatment. I think doctors just don't want to deal with the sides that treatment causes. When Hubby mentioned the itchy nose the doctor was like "Ok" and that was it...well, let me give him treatment, have his nose be so uncomfortable your entire face hurts then go "Ha-Ha, not so easy is it--jacka$$?"...I'm awful, huh?

Knock-on-wood....he hasn't had the problem since but now he just keeps mentioning it. I know he's worried. I finally had to tell him....."how would you ever think a motorcycle peg broken off through the ankle, would never ever act up again?"

We're hoping that it is the treatment but it will go away once the treatment ends...better yet IT NEVER happens again!!!!!

Hope you're goes away soon!

High!!
I did have gout before treatment but it only flared up about once a year and then only lasted afew days; indomythacin always got rid of it fast. Now when whatever it is comes, along it usually lasts a week or two and the anti-inflams don't do much to help....I really don't believe that it is gout in my case; have changed life style and uric acid levels are always normal during an attack of whatever this is!! Have been off treatment a year and a half now and except for this arthritis type stuff, life is good. best to hubby........ Jon.

hey susan-

I know this is a pretty old post, and I hope your hubby has not had any more flare-ups, but I have to tell you about this.

Please take a look at my post "lupus-like syndrome". I woke up one day with pain and swelling in my hands. Within a week, I was in the emergency room twice and it had progressed to my whole arms, my neck, my jaw, and my legs. I could not open my hands, lift my arms, open my mouth, bend my knees, or walk at all. I was pulled off treatment at that time.

I had never had any previous injuries in the affected areas. I did not have gout. My ANA was neg. My SED was 140 (for about 2 1/2 months). Almost all of my major tendons were at near-rupture. All of my muscles and nerves were permanently damaged. Six months later, a renowned specialist said it was a "interferon induced connective tissue disease" that I will now have for life!

I hope to God that nothing further has happened to your husband. I was never warned that I could become permanently crippled. I am on a mission to at least give the warning.

Good luck to you. You are an awesome person to love and care and be so concerned for your husband! God bless you and your family.

This is wierd,
I noticed the same kinda thing in my ankle last week. It felt more like I knocked up against the
edge of something hard. I couldn't figure it out.
Just filed it in the complaint department and it never even dawned on me that it may be related to the treatment.
It got better I hope his did too.

Hi Annie & Outlaw,

Yes, this post was old...back in April. He hasn't had an episode of this since.

At one point a few weeks ago he said it was tingling but it never hurt and after sleeping it went away. He said he thinks he was just "paranoid" about it.

Only time will tell.

Annie: I sure hope things start going better for you and take care.
