Tramadol works great for a lot of people. AKA Ultram. I personally can't even take a fraction of this med, it makes me violently ill. I can't stop vomitting whenI take it even in small doses. Same family as percocet. Same thing for me. Yes it works for pain, but it varies to the person taking it. It may be the best things since sliced bread and then it may not even take the edge off for you. You have to try it to really know.
I get the best pain relief from Vicodin, even in small doses. It just works best with my body chemistry.
Good luck and let us know how you do.

I usually take vicodine but have tendency to get sick if I have to take it more than a few days in a row. Even with food, but it does help with the pain.
I took a Tramadol today to see if I could tolerate it better--1st one and it gave me a bit of an upset stomach and pain was'nt lessened much. So I guess I will have to deal with the vic. and make sure to have enough food on my stomach each dose.
At least I know what to expect with that. I hate having to take new med's.
I filled a script not long ago for a new pain patch and my stomach cramped up so bad after day 2. $55 dollars down the toilet, as dr didnt have samples.

I have tried it before, but it didn't do anything for me. I also had no side effects at all, no dizziness, no drowsiness...and no pain relief. Then again, I was in a great deal of pain & when I took percocet, that didn't help either.

I've been taking tramadol (50mg per day) for about 3 months now. As far as working for my back pain...it does a decent job. However, it does nothing for nerve pain. I find it takes just enough of the edge off to allow me to get to the gym for my daily workout. Initially, I did have some nausea...but I started taking it with food and the nausea went away. It does have a slight "upper" effect on me, but aside from that I have no other side effects from it. Unless of course, you want to talk about the withdrawal symptoms that can occur when you stop taking it. Now that's another story! The withdrawals from tramadol are nasty...just as bad as any other opiod. Wean off this drug very gradually...or you'll pay for it.

I take one of these about 8pm and it helps kick the pain from the day down. The side effects I get are a little stomach feeling and some dizziness. The side effects seem to depend on how tired I am, the more tired the stronger. The thing I like with tramadol is it helps with the pain but I don't feel as drugged out as from hydrocodone.

Hi
I took Tramadol but it really didnt agree with me.
It made me extremely tired and made me feel sick.
I say its worth a try as people react differently.
All the best.

I was taking tramadol from when it first came out until last Novemeber, around twelve or thirteen years. I'd take vicadin when the pain was more than the tramadol could handle. My stomach finally rejected the vicadin altogether, and I've tried several months on the patch, and now I'm on oxycontin.
If you were taking vicadin, then tried the patch...I'm guessing tramadol isn't going to be strong enough for you. It worked great for me for a long time, and I've quit simply because I'm nearing another fusion, and it's not strong enough.

I have taken Tramadol and it worked really well. However, for me, it gave me terrible headaches and I have heard this from others. So, every time I took a pill, I also dad to take a couple of Aleeve's with it. I do not take it anymore, since I am a lot worse and have chronic pain from failed back fusions. But for the pain I originally had, at the beginning of my injury, it was good. If you are use to stronger meds, it may not be as good for you.
Good luck!

I've been taking Tramadol for about 3 yrs now as I can't take anything else due to allerigies. It did help at first but now it just takes enough edge off my pain to let me sleep some. Someone said something about it giving them headaches and I have been having alot of headaches but just thought it was just sinius problem's. Also it does make me itch but without it I have nothing that helps the pain any at all. I'm not sure if the itching is a side effect yet . I am going to ask my doctor next week.Hopefully it will work well for you.

I took it briefly and it made me itchy too and very warm. (By the way, itching is a side effect for some, Mimi). Plus I had strange dreams when I took it. It helped some, but not a lot. I guess I'm allergic to it.

I was taking tramadol for severe knee pain. I was taking it for about two months, and it caused havoc for my GI track. Upset my stomach and could not eat certain, acidy foods, especially coffee. It also gave me headaches, like a hang over as I was cutting back the daily dose.
I have stopped taking it, it did not really help with the pain much, not much has.

Tramadol worked for a while as an effective painkiller for me, but i quickly built a tolerance and began taking other medication. At the onset of my Tramadol prescription, i did get very, very itchy, but that went away in time.
The only other thing I have to say about Ttramadol, is DO NOT take it along with Soma (carisoprodol). I've been taking Soma regularly since around May, and the combination of the Tramadol and the Soma produced some very euphoric and "buzzy" effects for me. Since that time, I found an article online discussing the combination of these two drugs, and confirming that many people experience the same effect when taking this combination. Soma is known to increase the affects of an opiate when taken together, but for whatever this combination is particularly strong. I don't think I'm allowed to post a link, but if you search for "Soma Tramadol combination," you will find several articles regarding the situation. It's ironic to me, because both of these drugs aren't controlled substances, yet their potential for abuse is very high.
Hope that helps, feel better to all.

i took tramadol(Ultram) for over 2 years and recently have stopped taking it. It was OK for the nerve pain that I do have. It is not only a mild opiod but it has anti-depressant effects(norepinephrine & serotonin). PLEASE be extremely careful with taking it along with any anti-depressants. I was started on an anti-d and experiences something called serotonin syndrome which can actually be deadly. Please tell any and all doctors that you are taking this including psychiatrists. Also, it is a very difficult medication to get off of if you have been taking it every day for awhile. DO NOT STOP TAKING IT SUDDENTLY BECAUSE YOU WILL EXPERIENCE WITHDRAWAL(opiod & anti-depressant). This is the reason that it is so difficult to get off of for alot of people. If it is not helping then I would suggest not staying on it. It can be very effective for nerve pain though(although you might need a high dose). At one point I was taking 400mg/day.

I have been taking Tramadol 200mg twice a day now for about 4 years.
I also have had to supplement it with 1000mg naproxen (anti-inflammatory), 25mg Endep (depression and to help me sleep at night) and paracetamol, sometimes with Codeine. I also take Valium some nights to help with pain and sleep.
The Tamadol can some times make it difficult to pee, especially when having to take some other tablets before bed. So I get stage fright a bit in the mornings and during the night.
But it has got me this far without any real side effects.
Now though I have been having bad pain at night and even after putting on a heat pack on my lower back and taking everything the Dr will give me, I have just not been coping.
I was at the emergency rooms at the hospital for 5 hours and again for 6 hours in one day last week:o, but was finally able to get a script for Endone (Oxycodine 5mg) to get me through to my Dr's appointment. He will not normally give it to me.
So this week I have been able to change to the Norspan patches. I have not done so well on the last 2 days of 7 so I may have to increase the dose and change the patch a bit sooner.
Tomorrow I see my doctor so I hope to go up to the 20 microgram patch then and hopefully I can cut down on some of the other drugs (I hope).
Allan.

Allan, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THE NORSPAN PATCH WITH ANY OPIOD/OPIATE as you will experinence immediate withdrawal. I don't know if it interacts with the Ultram but I would guess so. I do know that it will definitely interact with the oxycodone and will send you into immediate withdrawal which may explain why you are feeling so terrible.

So I will have to stop taking any oxycodine. Is that correct? I would suppose that includes codeine?
Wow, then the only thing apart from the Anti-inflammatory (Naproxin), and an anti-depressant (endep I take also at night to help sleep), all I can take for bad times is Paracetamol. Is Valium ok occasionally? I can't take Baclafin as it makes me sick.
I hope any benefits I gain from the Norspan Patches are worth the change and transition to the new pain medication.
Thanks for any advice, there is not always enough time to ask he Doctor about these things, and I usually forget to ask the pharmacist, or just don't know what to ask.

Your doctor should have told you that ALL OPIOD/OPIATES including tramadol will interact and cause IMMEDIATE withdrawal with the Norspan patch. Here is what the manufacturer of the Norspan patch says to do for BT pain:
Use non-opioid analgesics for breakthrough or incident pain. In clinical trials, simple analgesics (such as paracetamol with or without codeine) (I guess the codeine is ok????) were used
when additional analgesia was required.
I think you may just need to get on a higher dose of the Norspan patch and please DO NOT mix with the oxycodone unless you enjoy withdrawal effects and I have not met anyone yet who did.:nono::eek:
brian
p.s. you should be ok with the valium but be extra careful because many people have died when they abused bupenopherine(ie Norspan) & a benzodiazepine(ie. Valium) but it was usually bad abuse like crushing both up & snorting or injecting them (so don't do this unless you have a death wish)
p.s.s here is what I learned about tramadol & buprenorphine & tramadol
Mixed opioid agonist-antagonist analgesics such as buprenorphine, butorphanol, nalbuphine, and pentazocine may theoretically decrease the analgesic effects of tramadol or cause withdrawal symptoms in patients who have been taking tramadol.

It's been a week since I went off the Tramadol and strait onto the 10micro Norspan Patch. I did use codeine and a couple of Endone's to get me through the first day or so, when I didn't know any better.
The last 2 days were not good but I stayed away from the Endone as you suggested. Today my Doctor changed me up to the 20micrograms Norspan patch.
Tonight has not been very good so far and I have only had Paracetamol. Though I might need a low dose of valium 5-10mg to get to sleep tonight.
Fingers crossed I will improve over the next few days.
I have been assured that there will be a suitable patch for me but I will have to be patient while trying to adjust. I was also told that the next step up if this doesn't relieve the pain is Fentnyl, a Durogesic.
As I said though I will play it one step at a time.
I guess there are quite a few others who have and are going through this process. Looking for some relief of the relenting pain. Mine being from a back injury causing 2 degenerating disc's in my lower back.

i do know if you go from an opiod/opiate to to buprenorphin(Norspan) that you MUST be in withdrawal or you will get extremely sick but I don't know if that works the other way around going from the Norspan to an opiod/opiate but I am sure your doctor would know(or at least I hope so if he is a doctor). I would suggest doing a post specificially about the buprenorphine(Norspan) to ask about interactions or switching back because I don't have a huge amount of knowledge concerning it.
brian
p.s. I do hope that you start feeling better over the next couple of days. I do know that feeling ill, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and even PAIN are possible side effects of the Norspan so if things are intolerable let the doctor know
p.s.s Stopping the tramadol immediately can cause very bad withdrawal as well. I just recently stopped it but very gradually. The big thing is the anti-depressant effects since it effects serotonin & norepinephrine. However I think you said that you were taking an anti-d so you might be alright. If you start getting extreme dizziness and severe depression/suicidal thinking call your doctor immediately or a half a tramadol maybe(but I would suggest calling the pharmacist or doctor since I am not one)

Tramadol has really help mitigate the pain from sciatica. I had a failed L4-L5 micro surgery. I have stopped it cold turkey multiple times with only mild withdrawal. I do not reccomend this course of action. Just want to say that we are all different. Careful tapering under a doctor's care is best.
All other eds have not helped, except Vicodin. However, the withdrawal from that is more severe, sweating, sleeplessnes, depression. I also stopped this cold turkey multiple times (again not reccomended).
I am back on tramadol and will certainly taper if I ever decide to stop. The sever sciatica pain shows no signs of stopping.

I have taken tramadol for years. It is a good pain med that is not hard on the kidneys or liver. It is a synthetic codine from what I understand. It isn't supposed to be addictive but it is. You don't have the cravings but it is hard to kick because of the withdraw. It picks me up and makes it hard to sleep. It makes me sweat and itch. When my body gets low, I start yawning a lot and I crash. If I don't take them late in the afternoon, I find it really hard to get out of bed the next morning. When you don't have any in your system, you are down until you take some. Someone commented on headaches and taking advil with them. You can take ultracet which is a tramadol and tylenol combination. I have taken it as well and it has the same pain killing effect. There isn't much different than the way they makes you feel.
