the sternum used to be a tender spot for me also. thank heavens it went away. part of it is forgetting to breath, part is just fibro messing with you again. try propping yourself with pillows so you sleep on your back. it helped me.
giggle, no room for anyone else in the bed, but oh!, how happy i was to have the relief.

I had this recently. Of course, you should go to the doctor anytime you're having chest pains and have heart problems ruled out. More than likely though you're suffering from costochondritis. I had this for a couple of months and then it just went away. You may want to try to take a break from underwire bras...I know how much better we look while wearing them, but they do put alot of pressure that can aggravate this situation. Also, for me, I had to prop myself up on my back as not to put pressure on the sides of my ribs. And, as I try very hard not to take pain meds on a daily basis ibuprofin worked well for the pain management. Of course, you should use whatever pain med you have that works best for you. Also, heat helps. Unfortunately this is something we just have to live with. Hopefully this bout will end quickly for you. I know it's very painful.

You should always have chest pains checked by your doc. Like others have posted before me though it is probably costracondritis I get bad bouts of it too
then I wind up with a weird sensation around my mouth cause I unconciously begin to breathe too shallow cause it hurts so it is like a hyperventellation
Pain meds rest and long soaks in epsom salts help ease it for me as does the heating pad. I have had a shot of cortisone into my sternum when it was really bad. I hope it passes quickly for you.

I've had the same pain for a few weeks now. It keeps me from taking deep breaths and my bras do make it worse. I think I'm going to go buy one without underwire (better than not wearing one lol!) Sleeping on my back helps and the epsom salt baths too. Sometimes I just stand in the shower anad let the warm water run over the area. I've had the chest pain before, but I didn't have any problems with it for about a year, and then it came back. Hopefully it will go away again soon. Good luck.

I'll weigh in with the rest. I had a lot of stabbing chest pains before Lyrica, to where I wondered what breast cancer felt like or a heart attack felt like. If I forget Lyrica, they are right back. I forgot it yesterday and I paid. I also had rib pain that follow the bra line that made it hard to even breathe--axsain cream helped that. Hope you get an answer soon, kiddo.

I have had this pain in the chest area, it feels sore to the touch and is very uncomfortable at times. I gave up wearing bras long ago, unless it is a necessity. I routinely sleep with a heating pad to my chest. It seems like the only thing that truly helps with the discomfort. My pain is between the breasts and runs down the center of my chest and radiates to each side. I hope that helps your fears, but as with all chest pain, do consult a doctor to be on the safe side.

Lets don't forget about acid reflux or Gerd. I recently had chest pains, sharp ones right in the middle of my chest shooting up and down. That along with shoulder and jaw pain caused my doc to send me for a heart stress test. That all came out fine. She did however start me on an prilosec and after about two months of it my chest pains are finally gone. The shoulder, jaw etc. are just part of fibro, CTD, MP, WHATEVER!!!!!.......giggle! Anyway just wanted to throw in another opinion.

You lot are the bee's knee's :) xxx thank you all so much x! Just come back from the d0cs been up allnight again and when l got out of bed l was in horrendous pain bottom ribs and the mid chest pain it hurt to brush my teeth or use my right arm :( l was so scared! Anyway rang doc and told her what was going on and l said lm thinking l have chosto she says l think your right :) RESULT!!!!!! l guess thats another point in me been diagnosed. She listened to my chest and said l do not think it is your heart and went on to tell me after she was pressing my chest and l was tender l wouldnt have pain like l describe if it were my heart but if it gets worse to go back. I got my pain killers changed to codeine phosphate? she did say the side effects are similar to the ones l was having off the other tablets. I feel like ive went 10 rounds with Mike tyson my back is aching so much :( I bought myself a heat thing you pop in microwave to help feels noce than a lumpy hot water bottle lol. I dont know how you lot cope feeling like this it wipes the flooor with you and has a massive impact on your daily life without a doubt! I am so grateful to you all more than you will ever know x as for goign braless.... is not an option with my boys lol lm big chested but l will try get a bra without underwire lve heard sports bras are really good. I hate that feeling like all of a sudden your bra feels too tight esp at night. Im forever pulling the front of my bra away from the front of my chest as it causes so much discomfort. Thanks again for sharing with me xxxx Will check in later as pain allows :) Tut! Take care xxx ps excuse my typos l type too fast!

Can you not wear your bra when you are at home relaxing? It's far better go without than to wear it when it causes pain. You should definitely not have to wear it at nighttime. I know, for me, the bra was causing a large part of my pain. As soon as I switched to a bra without underwire and started using my sports bra I healed. Took a couple of weeks for it to be gone, but the pain got better within a couple of days. If you're just not comfortable hanging free when there are other people in your home, you can drape a pretty scarf or lightweight blanket around your shoulders to give you some more privacy. Also, try to go somewhere where you can be fitted for a good bra....and try on lots of brands. They don't all fit the same. Such a pain trying to find a good bra. Brings me to tears just thinking about it.

Niecsey, underwires hurt no matter the size. Seriously, I have never had to worry about size unless it was finding a bra that would give me more! I truly can't wear underwires either, I have even removed the underwires from a few bras I bought a few years ago and gave up on. Go to a store that specializes in bras and let them fit you and find one without the pain. Good Luck hope you feel better soon.

Yep, the chest pain can be very scary, i first had a bout of it last summer, thepain radiated into my shoulders and jaw. i called my dr. and he sent me to er. my bp also was sky high, probably from anxiety in retrospect. but i was also having problems with my bp meds at the time.
they kept me for 2 days, ran every test you could think of plus had a stress test. all was well. the word chosto... was never mentioned though.
last month, after a bad uti i had the chest achiness again. it really isn't sharp pains for me like brm, it is a heavy ache. went to dr. he did an ekg, said all is well. ok
came home and hugged my beloved heating pad and in a few weeks it left. but as i said, it can be scary.
The best part of this board for me has been learning that so many of us suffer from same things , maybe at different severities , but it has taught me to be less anxious. to ride it out and eventually things go away.
i too go bra less at these times, weather permitting i just wear a big sweatshirt. ;)

Hi all x sorry could not reply earlier :( as you guessed l was ill again Friday night and had to ring doc gone midnight... the chest pain was really really bad :( l thought l was a goner :( anyway another result!!! The doctor l spoke to thinks l have FIBRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldnt believe it she asked me loads of questions and l didnt even have to mention it! She told me l really need seen by a specialist and to take extra pain killers until l can see someone who can give me steroids! That brought a smile to my face l can tell you after wondering what the hell is happening to me for so long! My pain was so bad it hurt to even talk! Im still suffering but not so severe in the chest mainly ribs knees and a new one shin pain! Is that unheard of? It didnt last long but really hurt. Well will leave things here cannot sit for long otherwise l risk setting my already tender chest off :( Thanks for all your tips etc l will be back xxx

Gosh ... thought I was alone with this. Sorry to hear others have it as it's not nice at all. This weekend I am on about my 4th really bad attack of costochondritis. No one I know seems to know what it it .. so I'm relieved to read this thread here. I have taken tramadol all weekend and just slept. I'm seeing my doc at 11am today ... she has diagnosed costo before but not told me why I get it. My very first atack lasted for a good couple of weeks and in those days I did not wear an underwire bra. I do hate wearing a bra and leave it off when possible. But it is underwire bras that I wear these days. I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue years ago but never any mention of fybro. I have suffered with sore muscles on exertion for many years. Lately my muscles have improved a fair bit .. but this costo is the pits ... can't take a full breath as it hurts so much .. sneezing and coughing is agony. Anyway .. I'm going to carry on with heat as suggested here and I also have an infra red lamp which I am going to try today. Hope u all feel better soon ;)

Hi niecsey  ... I think costo can follow different patterns at different times. I've had about 4 bad attacks over 7 years. Sometimes lasting a few weeks. Other attacks just seem to threaten then go away. This one is a bad one I'm having now. After much reading on the net today .. I think my latest attack may have come on from a lot of coughing I did up until recently. I had had flu which resulted in coughing (and I'm mild asthmatic) .. then the coughing continued and I realised it had become allergy. So I did an aggressive attack on dust mites in my bedroom (bought matress and duvet protectors) etc. The coughing has stopped .. but I have the costo now and it's not in a hurry to go either. Saw my doc today and she gave me co-codomol (prefer tramadol as the codomol upset my tum). She said I must take pain killers so as to breath properly because shallow breathing due to the pain can result in a chest infection. Great  .. Anyway I do hope u get some relief from the physio .. let us know how it goes? ;)

Hi again :) thanks for replying really appreciate it :). I have codeiene phospate too ... decided wont take the diclofenac unless lm desperate hate tht stuff. I didnt know you could take tramadol... thats worth remembering as l had it after thyroid surgery and it was fine for me. I sneezed last week and it really hurt my chest l wonder if that was my trigger? I also suffer if lm cold my chest will throb from trying to stay warm l never used to be like this. The cold really hurts me :(. Was wondering if you ever get like a bad stabbing sensation in your sternum area that really hurts but goes away as quick as it comes? Ive often wondered what that was l wonder if that is costo? Boy this fibro/costo going to have me learning alot about it! I never seen anywhere on net you can have attacks like we both have been having! Well just a quickie its pretty late and dont want to aggrivate anything. Take care x

Hi all x went to physio :) she didnt have any updated stuff like doc saying she thinks l have condo or the fibro mentioned by another doc so could only dela with what was in notes that was lower back pain. Anyway l have a lot of pain in the sacrum joint area she said she couldnt find anything wrong with them? I wonder why they wake me up through the night groaning in my sleep and wont let me turn over etc? strange that one! I go back in 2 weeks time she didnt want to do anything to aggrivate the condo... she said the bottom of my spine is very stiff and was pressing really hard to slacken it! Ive a few exercises to do at home she told me not to attempt the pilates and yoga dvds lve just bought till she thinks l am ready. However l do have to take the diclofenac to get rid of the inflammation in the ribs. I have always been very flexible and was good at gymnastics etc when younger so l didnt have much problem with her bending my legs all over lol My lower back is aching abit now so wont stay on long hope everyone is ok today :0 talk to you soon xxx

Someone I know was being treated for severe asthma due to chest pain/pressure and difficulty breathing. She was hospitalized a handful of times. She was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. According to what the doctors told her, her fibro pain centralizes in the chest and causes severe pain to the point that she has difficulty breathing because it hurts to take a breath.

Ok, I'm definitely thinking stress can flare this up. I've been trying to get out of my house to go to my hometown as we have a family friend (like a grandfather to me) who is dying today. Couldn't find my keys...found out my spare set is at my parents 2hrs away and my set is in my DH's car 1hr+ away (and he can't leave work yet). Of course, I only found out where they were after panic set and tearing up my house. Well, my pain has flared up in my ribs and sternum. For some reason all this went straight to that location instead of my back....so now I'm drinking wine and trying to relax as I can't go anywhere anyway. I never noticed this reaction before but thought that it might help some of you understand that maybe severe stress can flare up this area too???

It's been a full week since the pain came on really bad and I am so sick of it! Trying lots of heat at the moment along with my pain meds. Today there was a sudden improvement after sleeping off the pain meds all morning. Dunno if the heat is helping .. but then suddenoy the pain returns. This confuses me cos if there is inflamation there where does it suddenly go to and then why suddenly return? Oh well .. just ranting a bit .. I have got so little work done this week .. NOT amused! :( .. I'm going to phone my doc on Monday if I'm no better and ask if I can try a cortisone shot into the sore area. I'm wondering if anyone else has had that and if it helped??

This is my first time on here. I was diagnosed with costo today but didn't know how to spell it (thought it might be gastro). Finally found this thread. The doc prescribed me a medrol dose pack (steroid). He explained to me that it is inflammation in a lining in the chest behind my breast bone. I have fibro and have had a lot of soreness and pain in my breastbone but this is different...bad pain in pit of stomach and feels like something stuck in my esophagus. Then when I breathe deeply, it feels like a huge gas bubble expands in the center of my chest. Started meds today and thought I was feeling better....then I ate supper and the pain got severe again. My doc said absolutely nothing about pain meds. hmmm....

Hi there ... Not sure what u have there because gastro is nothing to do with costochondritis. Also what u describe sounds more like stomach problems, acid etc. So I'm confused as to what u were given steroids for?? Are they helping? U sound like u have a stomach ulcer possibly which can be caused by a bacteria (H Pylori). Whatever is causing ur pain, u have my sympathy .. it's just the pits to have continuous pain.

I get quite a lot of chest pains as well, usually brought on after walking either on the level or up and down stairs. Often get them of a night as well for no apparent reason. One thing I've noticed is that I'll often get quite a lot of indigestion usually a few days before or after. Not sure if it's related tho. Mentioned it to doc and he didnt seem bothered about it, just told me to keep taking the pills ! I've tried using movelat cream and another gel stuff (can't remember name ) but neither really seem to do much good - apart from smell horrible ! I usually end up taking ibuprofen and co-codamol for pain relief but with them i have to take omeprazole for the windy pops :blob_fire
As it tends to hit me most of a night, just a small heated pad helps and cuddling up to a pillow seems to help. I've been offered the cortisone injection but i've turned it down for now cos of the side effects. But i'd like it if someone could remind me where i've seen someone else asking about them cos i'm now seriously thinking about trying it for myself. just can't remember where i've read it ! dohhh

I know .. scarey thought! Mine started exactly 9 days ago and I'm delighted to see it is on the mend now! Still a bit sore to take a full breath .. but not needing pain killers in the daytime anymore. I'm realy happy about that cos now I can get some work done around this house instead of sleeping all day due to the effect of the pain meds. As with u .. I think this has been my worst attack .. though the first one a few years ago if I recall, was pretty bad. I never went to a doc that time cos I thought it was breast cancer lol and I was too scared to hear the diagnosis ... just used to cry myself to sleep at night hugging a hot water bottle. My only fear now is .. will it happen again .. I'm really worried about that. Somehow I just cannot get another bad cough .. cos I'm convinced that's what brought this attack on :(

Were you diagnosed with any kind of testing? You must of had a CT scan I would guess. What other kinds of tests? Have you had an endosocopy? Where they look down your esophogus into your stomach and sometimes through into the first part of your small colon? They can diagnose ulcers, gastric reflux, and whatever else they see. Your esophogus sounds like a problem I have from my acid reflux, called GERD (Gastro-esophogeal reflux disease). When the acid comes up into your esophogus, it burns the membraneous tissue lining and scars it. Sometimes I too get this feeling like I haven't quite swallowed something, and it's a lump in my throat and it drives me crazy. I drink lots and lots of water, and it eventually goes away. Anyone with GERD should be on a acid-pump prohibitor medicine such as Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid (NOT all antacids are acid preventing). Never eat later than three hours before bedtime if you have it bad, never eat foods that give you indigestion in the daytime at night. I'm wondering how your appetite is. How did they determine whether the soreness you feel is on the inside of your stomach or outside? I get pain in my chest from GERD and it feels like a heart attack. I don't think that's the kind of pain you are speaking about though because you are talking about it lasting for weeks? This isn't something I've experienced. Like someone said, ulcers are caused by bacteria and are now treated with antibiotics. Otherwise they don't really heal and go away. Nexium works really good for my esophogeal acid causing the lump in my throat thing. It has something in it they claim helps to heal the throat lining.

I have had that weird "bubble" or pressure type of pain in my chest, etc. on and off for some time now. Sometimes, it just starts in my chest and like some of you mentioned here, it feels like I either haven't completely swallowed something and it's stuck in my esophagus or sometimes it hurts soooo bad it feels like I have a tennis ball stuck in there!
Other times, that darn "tennis ball" seems to actually start in my back, upper or middle back, and work its way around until it makes its way to my chest. The only thing I've done for it is drink something carbonated like Pepsi which makes me belch and that does seem to help. I figured it might just be a large gas pocket. It is very scary when it happens and, of course, you can't help but worry that it might be a heart attack!
I'm sorry, but my darn brain doesn't let me understand all these posts very well so please bear with me. So those of you who have had this type of pain ... what have your doctors told you is causing it and what did they tell you to do about it?
Thanks!

Do l take it then wait to take the other pain killers or is it ok to take it all together? Thanks guys take care xxx

Hi there thanks for the reply x it was the tablets l got l never even heard of the diclofenac cream/gel!! Sounds like worth a try :) ... the codeine phosphate is leaving an awful taste in my mouth now too :( l wonder if thats from taking the diclofenac for a few days? Did you try the lanspeazole while you took the tablet form of diclofenac? xxx

hiya, nope when i was on the tabs I didn't try lanspeazole, but I'm wondering if that's got another name? I'm taking Ibuprofen and cos I got a lot of indigestion/ reflux with that I was given Omeprazole (just looking at the "zole" bit) got me thinking they might be the same thing.
Anyway Diclofenac gel - basically active ingredient is diclofenac diethylammonium, which is a NSAID. Think the retail name for it is Voltarol emulgel. It's either that or Movelat, can never remember which is which!
Anyway I'm sure that if you g--gle it you'll find out more info otherwise I got my info from tiscali off their lifestyle section... was lots on it there.
Or if you want a laugh and have understanding friends/ relatives you could try my latest lil idea for helping with chest pain...... I got one of those gel packs which you can either freeze or microwave, just one of the small long ones- perfect length and not too heavy. Got an old t-shirt, cut the sides bout 6 inches and sewed the front up so it made a pocket you can slide the gel pack into. I call it my fillet pouch :) That way there is nothing tight around your chest and the heat is great ! Down side is you look like dolly parton ! Oh well you gotta laugh.

i developed a hiatal hernia back in 1973, when my first child was born. the doc gave me tagamet which helped for many yrs. i finally got so sick, i was nauseas, and in pain all the time. well after dropping 20 lbs. and having constant air burps, i finally had it removed just over a yr ago. i really let it get to that point, just knowing i was facing surgery if i complained. i just took ulcer meds for all those yrs.
how they can tell if you have this is an endoscopy or upper gi. you really might want to look into that.
as far as chondro goes, i get that at times during a flare. a couple mos. ago my rheumo gave me an injection of cortizone in my upper arm, and it was better in a few days.
hope you have already seen a gastreologist to be ckd. out, if not, and you are getting nausea, the chest pain, air burps, and heart burn, i would stongly suggest it.
hope you're feeling better....bevann

Thanks Bevann.... l was diagnosed with h pylori last year and had the triple medication was still a bit iffy after that but have beent aking manuka honey for a while and stomach probs have lessened... they did say however if l kept having probs l would have to have the endoscopy which l wasnt too happy about...terrfied to ahve that to put it mildly.... last night the stomach probs started l have pain right in the middle of my chest sternum... l also have a sour not acidic creamy taste in my mouth it is so foul :(... lve also started getting aches/pain in my lower right outside lower rib are when l go to the toilet... and further up l feel like l have a baby kicking!!! which l know l have not got a baby in there lol. Ive also had this kicking sensation in the past but lower down my stomach esp left sided bottom of rib area. My stomachs been bad for a few days l think off the diclofenac and codiene phosphate which made me constipated so l stopped taking them a few days ago and just used paracetemol and heat as pain killers. I am not constipated now. I felt so sore and ill this morning l almost rang the doc with the stomach aches but had some pain killers and heat and dont feel too bad now. Does anyone else with fibro understand the symptoms lm describing? Thanks all for reading hope things are not too bad xxx Thanks again Bevann

Niecsey,
I do relate to the pains that feel like a baby kicking. It's such a weird feeling. But what it is, is gas moving in your intestinal tract, with a big bubble kind of movement that actually feels like the movement of a baby. It's not a kicking movement as much as a moving sensation? I've had GERD, and I've had two endoscopys, and had absolutely no problem with them. They put you out, then you wake up, and at most they anticipate a mild pain, but I had none whatsoever. It would be the best thing, because they go in and SEE what's going on - no more guessing. If they don't find anything, you can go from there. You really need to get thououghly checked out though, because some of your symptoms are indictive of sugar problems. Does diabetes run in your family? I have HYPO glycemia, I get low blood sugar, and I get nauseated when I don't eat. If it worsens I'll get a little trembly, and feel very very tired. Hope this helps. The acidic creamy taste in your mouth, has anyone you know been able to tell you if it smells sweet? Have your ketones every been checked? Elevevated ketones from diabetes causing ketone acidosis and the breath smells sweet. It's a potentionally life threatening condition, but thinking this involves knowing more about your family Hx and do you eat alot of sweets?

Niecsey, I was really curious about the bad taste problem, so I ran this on the symptom checker. After reading what it said, I just had to post and tell you a bit of it.
Reactions to medications can cause bad taste, coated tongue, bad smell, etc...
Also being constipated, which would be a cause of some of the kid kicking gassy feelings.
Also could indicate a sinus condition.
These were the top 3 reasons for this, but there were others. You may want to check it out. The symptom checker is over there on the right of your screen.
Good luck...

You had your thyroid removed? Are you are medication for that? I have hypothyroidism, (a low functioning thyroid) and I've been on medication for 36 years to keep my metabolism and everything else functioning. Most of you out there probably know, when you have one endocrine gland malfunctioning (any of the gland of the endocrine system that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream) like the thyroid, it affects all the glands, like the pancreas etc. You know Niecsey, I have gall bladder bile reflux, and stomach reflux which theoretically means my bile can literally back up into my throat. If it even remotely smells or tastes like intestinal fluids, or vomit - this may be something to have checked out. An endoscopy might detect that, but mine was detected with a gall bladder test, and like I said - I asked my doctor and he said theoretically it could happen. Does the UK have any kind of medical assistance program for those that can't afford insurance? I definitely hope you will keep us informed as to your progress.

Really happy to reply that the horrible pain in my chest and upper abs is gone. Took the whole medrol dose pkg. My Rheumatologist said the same thing..."sounds like gastro to me, not costo"....but, pain is gone so maybe my IM doc knew what he was doing!!?? Hope you're all having a better day today. Sounds like everyone on here goes through the same cycles.....excruciating pain for days/weeks then one day when we feel like a super person and we overdo it trying to get all those things done we can never do and then back to square one....excruciating pain. It helps to know I haven't lost my mind and I'm not the only one suffering these cycles.

Ishla - You mentioned a "symptom checker" being on the right of the screen. Did you mean on this thread screen because I couldn't find such a thing. I ask because I've been looking for something like that.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I don't know if they will let me spell it out exactly, but here goes.
The symptom checker is usually on the right hand side of the screen. I did notice that it is NOT there when you are logged in, so maybe you have to look before logging on the this site. It is a light greenish color, with a flesh toned picture of the human figure on it. It says symptom checker on it at the top of it.
Now here's the part that may not stay... it's from the Web MD site.
