Hi all, I hope everyone is having a good day. I got real sick Monday night. I started vomiting about 10pm and continued to vomit until Wednesday a.m. This all started when I changed my patch. I even took it off and was still very sick. I called pm and she changed my dosage from 75mcg to 25 mcg and so far so good. Unfortunately during all of this I got pneumonia. ( my GP thinks I may have aspirated some vomit while I was vomiting. (yuck). Anyone else ever go thru this? Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else might be having a similar problem. If you do call the doctor immediately and don't wait like I did. I feel like I could have ended up in the hospital or worse. Take Care all. Dee
Ps. You were Executor 75mcg was too much.

Hope you are feeling better! The 75 really is a powerful punch. Keep on eye on things as you've also had a big drop now....You may need to tweak back upwards a little. Your Doc probably wanted to be on the safe side and didn't feel comfortable with the 50. The problem with the 25, however, is that it's only 1/3 of what you were getting. They really need a 40 or something in between the 25 & 50. You may need to a 12, or even go to the 50 at some point...Just monitor yourself.
Hope you feel better.

Dee, PRAISE THE LORD you are okay. Moldova just recently went thru a serious reaction as well. They moved her from 25 to 75 mg and she actually went into seizures. There is a thread here on the board. I started it requesting prayer for her. She is doing fine now but they ended up saying she had an Fentanyl Overdose and took her off of it. Two weeks later they just started her on oxycontin and so far so good.
I pray that you are feeling better soon. Right now my daughter has pnemonia too. She has been so sick. I could not imagine having pnemonia and coughing with your back pain. You poor thing. Take care and let everyone wait on you hand and foot.

Pepper my ribs are so sore it hurts to breathe add coughing and sneezing to that and you got some pain. Lol, I had Doug make me some brownies so I could have a little bit of brownie with butter pecan ice cream...so good. Plus my appetite is just gone and I feel so queasy if I eat anything but ice cream. So I am mostly living on clear liquids. The worst part of this is my Mom had a heart attack Monday, and is in the hospital and I couldn't go see her. I feel like a heel, but I am just to sick. She is doing fine now and should be released this weekend. Take Care All, Dee

Oh yes I definitely recall when this happened to me. I was switched from 25 to 50 and I had the same severe reaction. I woke up on the 3rd day and was extremely dizzy, lightheaded, and throwing up. I knew it was from the patch so I immediately ripped it off. You are extremely lucky that you did not stop breathing since this is what kills people most of the time from the OD. I should have gone to the hospital as well and I realize that I could have died. You should be extremely grateful that you lived and survived. I try to warn people now when they increase the patch. I am pretty sure that I warned Moldova before she did an increase. You just never know who is going to be sensitive and who is not. I had to cut mine back down to 25, then a month later went to 37(25 +12) and then a month after that was up to the 50. So, just because this did happen does not mean you won't build up tolerance and eventually end up on that dose (me being case in point). Thank God that we are both still alive.

Omg its happening again. I started getting sick again. I ripped that patch off quick and I am still getting sick. I don't think this medication is going to work for me. I will call the doctor as soon as it gets a little later. Why me?

Are you ok? Please let us know how you are doing?
You've certainly had a rough time lately. Hope you mom is ok too.
My pain all started with pneumonia. I hate pneumonia!!
Please take it easy.
How long were you on the methadone before you quit taking it? I've heard that it can take awhile for the drowsiness to ease up. Did you give it enough time? I guess everyone is different some people will not be as drowsy as others. My pm doc has mentioned meth for me down the road and I worry about the drowsiness.
Could you doc maybe keep you on the lower patch but add something stronger to go with it? I don't remember what you're taking for breakthrough.
Good luck.~Mush

Dee, Ughhhhh.....please go to the ER or call your pm doctor straight away. Don't mess with the med. This med and reactions are nothing to mess with. Increases need to be taken very slowly. Moldova almost did not make it.
So sorry about your Mom.
Could part of the vomiting be due to the diaphram pressing on the stomach?
My daugher is on week 2 of being sick. They diagnosed her with pnemonia Thursday morning. She was on IV antibotics Thurs, Friday and this morning. Today she is laying around limp. The only thing she will drink is Diet Dr. Pepper. :D Not that it is my fav or anything. :D Not very substantial. We have been taking her in for IV's then coming home. I am beyond exhausted.
I am really, really worried about you. Please take care of yourself and I am saying prayers.

I am feeling a little better tonight. At least no more vomiting. I think I am going to take these patches and give them back to the doctor. Nothing is worth being that sick, plus with pneumonia I am just weak as a kitten.Pepper I hope your daughter gets better soon. This pneumonia is no fun. So far I am taking an oral steroid and antibiotic and using my nebulizer. I see GP early next week for a re-check. Take Care, Dee

Are you running a fever, or did you @ some point? If so, that could be the main problem. Any rise in body temp will cause the patch to release much more of the med than normal, and in some cases, all of it.
If you were on the 25 originally and didn't have any problems (until you moved to the 75), something isn't right about this latest incident. Also, it takes 14-17 hours on average, for your blood plasma level to fall 50% (half life). So, your very short term pain relief will be ok. You need to call a Doc, however, to get instructions on what to do for meds. Additionally, you've probably developed at least some dependence thus, WDs may kick in at some point. Another reason to talk to your Doc.
Please keep us posted on how you're doing. Hope you feel better!

What a good dectective you are Exec!! I bet she has had a fever. I know my daughter has.
Dee, you sound like you and my daughter could be roommates right now. You are both taking the same meds. They gave her codiene cough syrup too. Duh!! I have been worried about her sleeping so much. It is probably the cough syrup! LOL That is what happens when Mom gets sleep deprived and is taking meds - she gets dense. :D
Glad you are doing a little better. I just wish you would have called your doctor. Okay, I will quit being Mom!!

Dee,
2 weeks ago i ended up at ER and Poison control Dr said to me it was the smartest decision since some cases of Fentanyl patch using are fatal (sorry for details).
My dose was increased from 25 to 50; I applied at 7pm and woke up 3 am severely sick. I trew up so many times that I couldn't even keep water in me. I had seizers, dizziness, couldn't recognize my hubby who was next to me, severe (never in my life i had such a headache) headache to the point i couldn't open my eyes or hear any sounds, and I got spinal fluid leakage which was confirmed last week.
My Neurologist told me that during such a severe reaction anything can happen to the body. He knows patients who got heart / kidney failire due to reaction to FP.
It took me a good week to recover and start feeling better.
My PM and Neurologist took me off FP the minute I called them that day. And i am not allowed to go back to this meds.
In a hospital they used Dailidin to take care of my headache, charcoal IV (to clean blood from meds), some other IV to clean blood (don't remember the name) and fluid IV due to dehydration. Was not fun.
I was explained that does not matter if I did OK on 25 mg; having reaction at 50 shows my system does not react well to this patch so why risk? I was told at ER that this meds works as poison for my system and i have to stay away from it all together. My PM confirmed it.
He put me know on LA Oxy and BT - and thank God I am OK.
This was the worse reaction I ever experienced and I don't wish anybody to go through this. Honestly, even though I am not a panicky person, I thought I will not make it - that is how sick I was. First time in my life I had seizers, this something very scary too.
Dee, take care and if you have any questions i am here for you.
Good luck to you and feel better!

Thanks all fro your posts. I just wanted to tell you that I was taking 75mcg the first time I got sick and my PM lowered it to 25 mcg and I got sickabout 6 hours after putting it on. Oddly enough even though I have pneumonia I haven't had a fever. I think because of my hypothyroidism my temp usually runs 96.7 to 98.0 so I guess I have to be near death to have my temp hit 100. I have been wondering that maybe because I am hypothyroid my body doesn't metabolize the medicine quickly enough and thats why I get sick. Either way I am done with Fentanyl. Right now I am just happy to br back to my old as needed program. I will sure be happy to be done with this pneumonia. All I do is sleep. Take Care Everone, dee
Moldova, Just wanted to say I am happy to here you survived that awful scare. I just had the vomiting part and I was scared and miserable. The only thing I could keep down for 2 days was Popsicle's even water and sprite made me sick. Not much fun at all.

Dee, honey, my heart goes out to you - I know the feeling, trust me.
And I know what pneumonia is about: my last one happened next day after my second fusion surgery and it took me good 2-3 month to get over it completely.
Make sure you do breathing excersise , very important. Every hour take at least 10-15 deep breath: in and out. Out even more important than in and do it as slowly as possible.
I wish you a speedy recovery and good luck with your health issues.
God Bless!

Glad you're feeling better. The move from 25 to 75 was highly inappropriate.
According to Janssen, each 12.5 patch has the equivalent of 45Mg of morphine. Oxycodone is 1.5 times as potent as morphine, thus you divide the 45 by 1.5 and you get 30Mg of Oxy (per day) as a rough equivalent. So, if you were on the 75 patch, it's equal to 270Mg of Morphine, or 180Mg of Oxycodone. That's why you got sick.
I really wonder how many Docs truly understand the patch. I also have to wonder if Docs forget it's Micrograms and not milligrams.
Again, hope you feel better soon!

Thanks again to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. Executor maybe I didn't say it right before. I started on 75mcg and got real sick and then my doctor lowered the dosage to 25mcg and I couldn't even tolerate that. I think its possible that between my hypothyroidism and pneumonia maybe my system just couldn't handle it and boy did it let me know it. Moldova I have a machine that they gave me to breathe in for breathing exercises and boy does it make me cough and makes my ribs hurt, No pain no gain I guess. LOL.

If you were started @ 75, that was highly inappropriate. The manufacturer clearly states that extreme caution should be used when adopting the patch. In fact, they include a table used for conversion....For the 75 patch, you should have been taking no less than 225Mg of Oxycodone per day. In fact, the range is 225-335 (for the 75 patch). Additionally, it clearly states that the patch is for "opioid tolerant patients only."
The range for the 25 is 60-134Mg of Oxy per day. Were you taking at least 60mg of Oxy per day and it not working?
Lastly, depending on how quickly he had you start the 25 (from the 75), your BPL probably was still up. It takes 17 hours (on average) for the BPL to fall 50%. Even at 50%, that's too high for someone like you....That's the equivalent of a 35Mcg gram patch. Then, when you add the 25 on top of it, no wonder you got sick. I hate to so crass, but this Doc really screwed up.
I'm very sorry you had to go through this.
