I am not sure, but some of you may remember me. I have only two posts so far. I was asking questions about opiod tolerance. I just wanted to give a recent update on my medications.
As I mentioned in my last post, the dr. was trying me on methadone. I did not have very high hopes for it in the beginning because I was not getting any relief at all. Finally, after about three days, it started helping a little and by day five, it was doing pretty good. I did not have many side effects either. I was really worried about taking this because of all the hype that went with it. I thought it was going to make me do, see, and think all kinds of crazy stuff, but it didn't so that was good. The one side effect I did have from it just happens to be one that I can not handle at all. It made me so sleepy. I started on 10 mg 6 hrs, then dr. told me to go to 1-1/2 tablets which is 15 mg hr because it wasn't helping at all. Of course, the sleepiness got worse. I would fall asleep sitting up in my chair in front of computer while at work. Since the oxy products made it very difficult for me to urinate, that was out of the question.
For a long time, hydro worked great until I wore tha patch for three weeks, then my tolerance went up too. After that, even two Norco 10 would not help. Since hydro worked good earlier, he switched me to a compunded hydro 20 mg capsule with dextromethorphan. I think that is supposed to make hydro feel a little stronger. I really don't know. Anyone have any experience with this med?
As always ya'll...thanks for reading.

What he gave you is hydro with a stimulant...And actually? I have been on compounded hydro for moths, and am so tired of being sleepy, that Ive been wondering about asking my doc for some kind of help...
I just dont know if I want wht could help me in a "stimulant" way to be compounded into my hydro....
I pay for 120 tabs a month, and if its a bad mix, I dont want to be stuck...
the thing about compounding is freat....you can mix and match, but I really would want to try the new mixture together for a few days instead of the whole month...Thats just me thoug. Hope t works for you!!!

Well, to let you know the dextromethorphan is a stimulant medication and should help to combat the tiredness & sleepiness. I run into this problem as well and have posted about it. I try to counteract it with caffeine and it's not the best but I try to force myself to stay awake. Let us know how it goes.

Hello....I suggest a internet search as the compound is very complicated re: it's chemical breakdown and method(s) of action...Probably far too much so for discussion here. It has recently been introduced as a pain fighting compliment and has had some good success. Clearly, your Doc is trying to be creative and think out of the box, which is good.
Good luck.

Oh wow, I did a search on the wrong drug...It is a cough suppressant. I stand corrected!

Dextromethorphan is a mild opioid that is used to suppress coughs. It is not a stimulant.
However, it does possess a quality similar to methadone, in that it can help to preven or reverse tolerance. It's an NMDA antagonist. At any rate, this is a very wise doctor that ordered this compound. I think that all opioids should include an NMDA antagonist. This would go so far in helping prevent the tolerance that so often ruins the otherwise good effects of these opioids.

The tolerance has been a big issue. I was fortunate to find a local pharmacy that done compounding. It took them a couple of days, but that was ok. So far though, it doesn't seem to be working as well as I had wished, but I may need to give it time. I had to try something that did not make me so sleepy. In the beginning, the Norco would actually kind of "pick me up" a little, then it stopped working all together. Maybe after a short period of time, my tolerance will get better as well. Thanks for all the responses.

Good work John.
Never heard of ketobemidone. After looking it up I wonder why it's not more available here. Looks like a wonderful med. It's apparently available internationally as Ketodur LA.
