View Full Version : I woke up this morning w/ a rash on the back of my neck (I'm on Lamictal)

Lamictal has worked wonders for me. I haven't had any bad side effects. It totally controls my seizures, I've had to deal with some hair loss and have had weird dreams but the side effects don't compare to the Topamax and Keppra which really had an impact on my everyday quality of life.

Just when I thought things were going great, I woke up this morning with a little rash on the back of my neck. It's red with little bumps all over it. It covers are pretty small area but I'm still concerned.

Unfortunately my doctor is unavailable until Monday.

Has anybody experienced this? Is there anything Over the Counter that I can buy that would treat this?

btw, it doesn't itch at all. It's red with all these dots on it. I only was able to see it because I felt it and took a picture of it with my cell phone.

I'm having my Dr. paged through his service. Hopefully he can call something in for me.

I'm just curious if anyone else experienced this. I've been on Lamictal for a little less than 2 months and as I said, it worked great. If you have experienced a rash, how long had you been taking Lamictal? Also what dose were/are you on?

I would hate to have to go off it. I'm just a bit concerned because I've read so much about this med causing different rashes, one which is fatal.

Thats the RED FLAG WARNING. Contact your Doc top priority.

avoid clothing that can irritate (scratch) the area thats inflamed.

Try to find clothing that is loose. Depending on where you live if you can avoid contact with that area thats even better.

Try a damp wash cloth on the region and let it sit there for a 5 minutes or so, water only. I THINK it's luke warm; but NOT, repeat, NOT hot water.

Sorry to hear you are having this issue. It is either too high of a dose, or your bodies reaction to it :/ .

Thanks for the tip, Travis.

I spoke to my neuro today and explained it to him. He didn't sound too concerned. He told me to take benadryl and if the rash is still there Monday, make an appointment to see him next week.

In the meantime, I will take you up on some of your tips.

That happened to me also and my Dr took me off of it. He gave me samples of it first before writing a prescription just for that reason and said to let him know if it caused a rash, I think I was only on it for a week though.
Hopefully it won't continue for you.

I'm going to see my doctor hopefully tomorrow. The benadryl isn't working, the rash has spread and I have had a low fever since yesterday.

IMHO it doesn't sound like your neuro is taking your rash as seriously as perhaps it should be. As one of the other posters stated, a rash is the most potentially serious lamictal side effect. If it was me, I'd insist upon a Monday appt. and I wouldn't be shy about going to the ER before then if the rash continued to get worse. Good luck.

You need to stop taking that med right away! That is on of the side effects and it caused the same problem with me. When a little rash aparted, the doctor told me that it could be fatal and I must stop taking right away to be on the safe side.
