View Full Version : Unusual Area To Have Herpes

I have a unique situation with the herpes virus that I can't seem to get answers to. I was diagnosed about six months ago by my doctor with herpes on my left thumb. My outbrakes are about the size of a quarter and I don't get them anywhere else on my body. I have had this problem for a few years though. I didn't have health insurance in the past to find out what it was, nor did I ever think that it could be herpes. I didn't know that you could get it any place else on the body other than the mouth or genitals.

I don't think my doctor really understands it either because I can't get straight forward answers about it. First of all, how do I know if it's Herpes Type 1 or 2? He didn't take a sample of it. He just examined it and listened to me of how I described the reoccurance every couple of months along with pain. But I am pretty sure that he's right about it actually being Herpes because not only did I research it online looking at photos of the virus, but he prescibed Valtrex for me when I have a breakout and it does help a lot.

Second, what's the deal with spreading? I understand the common form of genital and oral as to how it's spread, but what about this situation. I'm afraid of giving this to my husband (who knows about it and doesn't have any form of the virus). My doctor said to just try to keep my hand away from him when I have a breakout.

As well, I'm worried about spreading it to other parts of my body. Is that possible? Could herpes on my hand be spread to my mouth or genitals?

Is there ANYONE that could give me any information on this rare case? PLEASE!

Thank you!

What you have is called Whitlow Herpes. Research that term and you should find some answers.
