I am going in to have a stimulator surgically implanted in a few days, and I was just wondering if others who have been through this, could answer this question for me. If it works and I am able to do more things, couldn't I re-injure myself if I start to do the bending, twisting and lifting, that I can not do now?
Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated.

My husband has one but he hasn't had any problem with that happening. My prayers are with you. I'll be praying that your surgery goes well and a speedy recovery.:angel:

Hi,
The spinal cord stimulator only masks your pain so yes, you can injure your back more. You should talk to your doctor more regarding the implant.

I can't believe your doctor did mention this to you . The stim only masks your pain.. It has nothing to do with fixing your spine , just covering up your pain with a buzzing sensation . I could always bend and twist , but I'm still not supposed to lift anything . Once the leads are scarred in you can do whatever and you won't pull it loose . If your looking for back pain relief don't get your hopes up to far . I haven't heard of to many people getting releif back there. It does wonders for my hip / leg pain.

If you ever used a push mower for a long time and your arms feel like there buzzing vibrating , it feels sort of that way when its on . It feels a whole lot better than the pain .

Lorie I forgot to mention , ever since my implant I have this nagging pain between my shoulder blades where the Dr. did my Laminectomy for the Leads ( actually I had 2 Lami's) Feels like muscle spasms or a big not that hurts mostly at night .. I'm gonna mention this to my surgeon on thursday. I'm not sure if anyone else experienced this or not.. Just thought I would mention this...Hope things go well . When is your implant date ?

Thanks guys. I did know that this is only a mask, but my concern was if you were able to do things after the stimulator was scarred in, such as lifting things, wouldn't you be taking the chance of injuring your back. It sounds like I will still have all of my restrictions...if I didn't want to re-injure myself. I am glad that you both have found it to work for your pain, that makes me more hopeful about doing it.
If I am in constant pain throughout the day, would I just keep it on all day? If that is the case, do you tend to get use to the vibrations...is it easy to walk around with the vibrations in the legs?

Yes, I leave mine on 24/7. Half the time I even forget I have it. Although you are not to drive with it on and need to turn it off for romantic. They do give you many settings to choose from I have my favorite and set it and forget it. I have setting for vibrations, buzzing and a wave that is the best way I can describe them. Some are stronger and some are weak. When the rep programs it they will ask you what you like. During my trial I played with the setting a lot. I missed having the SCS while I waited for the implant. Yes, I am still on restrictions,

I will do that. Happygirl440,I thought of another question. Will I be up to driving a day or so after I get home? I have to go pick my dog of from boarding and I am now wondering if that is going to be a problem.

The Drs. name is Dr. Sandhu MD and he is a Neurosurgeon that specializes in complex spinal disorders. He works at Georgetown University & Southern Maryland Hospital . My PM referred me to him, because of his specialty with complex cases. He told me that this Dr. was the only one that he knew of, that did the same things that this one does. That is why I am going farther away to have the surgery done.

Lorie you will not be able to drive for 2 weeks .. If your having a Laminectomy implant , NO you won't be driving.. sorry . :(
