Is this for testing with humans, or have these already been tested/proven?

What is the history of oral DMDs?

I'd guess this would first be available in the USA, and eventually other countries?

The different stages of approval for a drug are 3 stages, with stage 4 being after it is released, based on longer term results...at stage 3, it can be approved by the FDA for public release- and yes, at this point, it has been tested for as many as 15 years on humans...

FTY720 is the name of the oral drug...the academy of Neurology just published yet another study on it this week... this is being produced by Novartis pharmaceuticals.. the clinical trials are under the name Freedoms.

Another drug is being produced by Serano (the makers of Rebif) which is still in phase 2 trials- its being done under a study called Clarity. the drug is called Oral cladribine and in many states they are looking for volunteers now for the final stages of the study...they are pushing for a quick release of this drug once stage 3 is finalized, which should hopefully be in the next 18 months.

The biggest drawback at this time seems to be the side effects, including nausea, inflammation of the nasal passages, breathing difficulties, and/or reduction in heart rate. The drug companies are still trying to work these out.

Hope this helps !

This is exciting news. I hope they can do something about the side effects, but just the thought of not doing injections for the rest of my life is great!

...released just this week on FTY720 (fingomolid). All people staying in the study for 3 years had significant improvement and 65% remained relapse free. The article I saw also reported that 89% percent of patients remained free of inflammatory activity according to the MRIs.

Hi all, It has been a while since I posted here and thought Id update you on my FTY720 journey. I'm pretty much under the assumption that I am on the placebo. Ive had a few relapses and have taken 2 interesting falls in the past 9 months. GRRRRRR. (the last one just the other day and have thrown my back out as a result) I intend to contact my neuro next week and go off the trial. I do believe, from what I have heard from others in the trial, who appear to be on the "real" thing, that it is actually working for them. So there is hope. Luv ya all.

Thank you for the update! Sorry to hear you've had episodes. :(

I wonder... if oral DMDs become reality for the general public how this will translate in costs. I'd certainly hope it would be much cheaper than the current options! I'm fortunate that I don't pay much for Copaxone after my insurance and the copay, but I can only imagine those without insurance options. :(
