I had unprotected sex with a partner that I was casually dating for just a short time in November. I had an HIV test in February that was negative. In March I needed to have surgery. Prior to the surgery, I had some blood work done that included another HIV test in addition to CBC etc ... It also came back negative. It has been a month since my surgery(which was done on my tailbone) and I noticed the other day that I have an enlarged lymph node. I went to the Dr. yesterday and he told me that it is absolutely not from HIV, however, I can't stop thinking that I have it. What are the chances that I would test negative 4 months after the exposure? I am worried sick! Please help me.

Try not to worry. I am not a doctor but what I have heard from the doc and health dept. when I was once worried about the same thing is that it would most likely have shown up by now if you had been exposed. At the longest I think it is 6 months. If you are that worried wait until the 6th month mark and test one more time. And of course make sure your protect yourself from here on out so you don't put yourself under any more uneccessary mental stress and worry. Try to relax!
