There is an old thread with this title. I am writing this in the hope that others with the same problem can benefit from the solution I have found.
I have experienced a sudden cramp in my throat on the right side a few times in the last 10 years. It usually happens unexpectedly and is brought on by a cough or yawn, usually when my head is turned to one side. The pain is extremely severe and swallowing is very painful. If my reaction to this is swift and I manipulate the throat by pushing hard into the side of the throat on the affected side, I am able to "click" the throat back so that the pain is bearable and disappears within a few minutes. However, if I miss this window of opportunity then the cramp becomes severe and the spasm tends to draw my head down towards my chest.
I have tried doctors and ENT specialists but they had no knowledge of this condition. Some years ago I had to be hospitalised because of the pain and after physiotherapy, various muscle relaxants, pain killers etc. I was given morphine which relaxed me to such an extent that the throat corrected.
Last month I was on holiday in another country and had another severe occurrence. It happened at night on a holiday weekend so I endured the pain for the night but by morning I was desperate. I went to a medical centre and with the help of a relation explained the situation to the doctor. He arranged injections of pethidine 100mg and maxolon 10mg (nausea), together with some Voltarin tablets after which I had a sleep for about 2 hours. When I awoke I was amazed at the relief I felt and was able to swallow and eat. Within a few hours the pain was almost gone.
I am recording this because for about 10 years I have suffered and never had a remedy, and was also despondent because no-one knew about the condition. I now keep details of the injections on file so that in future I will be able to react quickly and get relief. Hopefully this will be of benefit to others, especially those who detailed their experiences in the earlier thread.
