I have crazy, heavy periods and I am tired of them each and every month. Has anyone tried the Mirena IUD? I am eager to learn more about it. I've read a great deal, but I'd like to hear some first hand accounts about it. Especially if it's made your periods lighter or made them go away all together.

I have had the Mirena for 3 years and my periods have stopped completely. But I think that it may be the cause of my unexplained weight gain. (I have a very strict diet-dr. approved, exercise and bloodwork done-no known cause :() I have an appointment next week and will probably get it out. Otherwise it has been great.

Hi, I am getting the Mirena IUD on the 28th. I just had my 2nd baby and am pretty sure I'm done...not completely which is why I did not tie my tubes. I've heard more good things than bad about them. My Dr. recommended this one over the non-hormonal kind and from every account I've heard the Mirena lightens your periods, however the hormones can have some side effects that many other forms of b/c do.
I'm quite nervous to have it put in...I'm afraid it's going to hurt. I decided that since there's no way I can remember to take a pill everyday that this would be the best option for me.
I would also like to hear of anyone's experience, good or bad.

Hi, I tried using Mirena the other year as I've suffered with really bad periods for quite a few years now- being on really heavy at times for well over 7 days and with bad cramps. Fitting was more embarrassing than anything else, to be honest it was no worse than getting a smear done. There was a sharp but bearable pain for a second- no more and that was it done. Bit of fiddling round while the gp was checking the strings on it and I was free to go... I was told to take some pain killers before going to get it, but cos I was driving I decided not to. That was in the morning and I was in work in the afternoon. Took a few tablets then and all I had was just some mild cramps- bearable.
I was told about how it might stop periods or lighten them, but unfortunately for me I suffered a lot of spotting (heavy at times) with no obvious pattern to it. Seemed to get the usual cramps and PMS symptoms when I would have been due but no period. One side effect I had though was weight gain. Went up over 2 stone. I also suffered more migraines but whether that was connected to Mirena or not, I don't know. In the end I decided that I wasn't really benefitting from Mirena, was still getting cramps, had put on loads of weight and just felt generally miserable with it. So back to the docs- another quick sharp sensation and that was it. Was told it could take upto a year to get into a routine, but it was more like 2 years and even now it's still as and when it feels like - but definitely lighter than previously.
I'd say try it though if you do suffer from heavy periods as it definitely lessens them but be prepared for light break-thru bleeding as a possible side effect.

I have been on Mirena for almost 4 years and I am having it removed tomorrow as a matter of fact. I had continuous spotting for the first 9 months after insertion. Then had no periods for quite sometime. This year I have been having spotting again with no routine really to it......finally got to me so I'm getting rid of it.
