Ok..1st if you're here, thanks for taking time to help me. Here's my story--31 yr.old female in good physical condition.

I have been having problems for over 2yrs.feeling like something is stuck in my throat. It gets worse after meals & I have an awful taste in my mouth ALL the time...which is about to drive me crazy!!!------------------------------------Due to this, last summer I had a tonsillectomy........yes my ENT thought it was the answer to my ongoing problems.

OK---here I am.Still having these problems & truly desperate!! My dr.did the EGD along with other tests & diagnosed me with a hiatal hernia. He's treated it for some time now with now success whatsoever. It seems to only get worse & I can literally get stuff out of my throat.(SORRY,I know it's gross, but I need advice like so bad!!)..I get this mucus in my throat that will be so think & sticky and like hang!! I have to actually get 2 q-tips in each hand & clamp onto it and pull it out!!----------------------------I have taken stuff for sinus,allergies,etc....because I'd never had anything like this & just thought it must be sinus.***wishful thinking***

Yesterday I go back to dr & he tells me that I'm maxed out on meds for this, there's nothing left but surgery.I've been taking protonix twice a day,a liquid he calls a GI cocktail 3x a day,& another I can't even remember the name of 3x a day!.........................all with no change!!FRUSTRATED......

Now,my question is..would a hiatal hernia cause these problems? I've looked it up & what I find points to laryngopharyngeal reflux(LPR)...Like the sticky mucus in throat.I'm just scared absolutely to death of having another surgery and it not fixing my problem....I'm not at all familiar with LPR,but I'm assuming if it were to be that instead of the hiatal hernia,my problems would still be there. Does LPR show up on EGD or how is it dx?? Terrified, like I said of yet another un-necessary surgery!! PLEASE HELP. And thanks SO much for any help anyone can give!

Hi, I'm having a similar problem. Do you have what seems like spasms of the esophogus, or maybe pressure-like pains? I'm thinking I may have a hialal hernia.

I'm not as far as you as far as treatment goes. They've done some bloodwork on me today, to see if I have that pylori bacteria. If that comes back clean, then they're going to refer me to a GI doctor.

I was hoping to have some tests (other than blood work) run today.:confused:

I suggest you both read some Of the thread at top of this -- "Gerd Sufferers.. I feel Good.. Let me tell you why"-- started by bluepumkin -- he was treated for 9 years for a hiatal hernia and was cured. I can't believe it's been 5 years since I recommended to him to use magnesium for cramping and muscle spasms.

I think many doctors do not consider nutrition -- mostly just drugs and surgery.

Neither one of those probems really.....My main thing is this AWFUL mucus that collects in my throat and I just constantly feel like there's something hanging in there. And it really is.It's that excessive amount of mucus-I periodically have to clean my throat out by taking 2 q-tips squeezing them together and pulling it out. I'm telling you-----it's unimaginable. If someone had told me they had this kind of stuff going on,I would have never even understood the gravity of the problem. I guess you just have to be there.

Mucus that collects in the throat usually forms in the sinus cavities and drips in and collects in the throat. The mucus has to be caused by something??

Have you been to see an ENT or allergy doctor?

Mom2C&J,

I am so sorry for your suffering. I have read A LOT of on the Acid Reflux board - and it does sound a lot like LPR. I heard the standard treatment for LPR is Nexium @ 40MG twice per day. Also, have heard that having the Nissen surgery may not be helpful with LPR.

Please go to the Acid Reflux board and do a search for LPR - there is some GREAT information out there on it.

I suffer from horrible CONSTANT burning acid reflux. Have tried so many PPI's - no help. I feel your pain.

I hope you find some answers soon.

Good Luck,

Vanessa

Harry--
Yes I've been to 2 ENTs & neither of them think it's sinus/allergy related however they've tried me on multiple meds for it,kind of trial and error just to see if it helped. My gastro & surgeon both say that it's the junk being pushed back up my throat instead of sinus drip or anything like that.

Vanessa--Thank you very much for your well wishing. It helps to know someone understands and has the same or similar problems.I wish you the best as well.

I called my doc today, she is a natropathic doctor, and said I have been having pain when I eat in my chest right under the front where my bra meets in the center. I try to eat and when I do I feel all hard and bloated up in that spot.
She said until I get in tuesday to not eat chocholate, drink caffine, coffe, OR peppermint. I was taking gas ex pills [the peppermint ones] b/c I thought I had gas. It made it 10000% worse.
She made me an appt and said that if thats what it is she will have to work on it herself i believe she said mobilize it. I dont have the symptoms you do, but I thought Id share.
I do have another doc who is an MD but they are partners and he is out of town, and he trust her completely. He tries naturopathic options before surgery, ect.
Harry, have you heard of anything like this? that it can be worked on manually bya a person? thx!
xoxoxox,

P.S. I hope you get some relief without surgery~

I just wanted to know if you ever got any relief from the mucus. I have the EXACT same problem. I have constant mucus pouring into my throat . It feels like it is hanging there all the time. It is especially worse after I carbs.
I have to do a netipot about 5 times a day just to clear some of it out.
I am also at my end. I have been to every dr possible. First the gastro because I feel like I can't swallow. Then the ent. He did the scope and said it was irritated and handed me nexium twice a day. NO HELP.

I have gone into a severe state of depression over this. I am getting married in september and I fear that I won't be able to go thru with it because of the mucus.
Everything I ever read about lpr is negative. Does anyone ever get relief??
This all started with the awful throw up taste in my mouth.
Does anyone have any positive advice with lpr. I am on over a month and a half of nexium?

Hi Heather,Sorry to hear about your problems with this mess,as it is SOOOO annoying. It's about to drive me crazy! No,I never get much relief from anything whatsoever.Have tried everything imaginable. Have did the netipot & several different sinus washes, however nothing helps this nasty problem. Now the sinus washes do make my nose and sinus area feel better,it does nothing for the mucus in the throat since it's coming from down the throat as opposed to above it. Hope you get better. And if I do find any relief,I will let you know.I go this week to discuss surgery for this again.
