hi everyone,

I'm new to the board so i hope im not asking a stupid question, but...

is it true that TMD/TMJ and/or a miss-aligned jaw can cause problems with the tensor tympani and the levi palatine muscles which in turn can cause problems with the eustation tube?

any input would be much appreciated.

Kris.

To be honest I have never heard the exact muscle names quoted before but if you are asking if tmj can affect or cause ear problems such as ear ringing, humming or high pitch noises or whistling, stuffiness or congestion or a sense of hearing loss or muffled sounds, pain in and around the ear, popping or cracking sound within the ear, etc., yes, it can.

Ditto....I have all those same issues with my ears. I'm on the "inner ear" board as well.

Interesting how even though Ear Doctors don't believe there's a connection...I really don't see how, with having all the symptoms and many people experiencing this similarity, there wouldn't be.

Problem is I haven't found a doctor who can actually DO anything about it. ENT's don't recognize TMJ as an issue related with inner (dizziness, vertigo) or middle ear issues (pressure, stuffiness, nasal probs, pain, ringing, etc.)

I guess the best thing is to find the right TMJ dentist. Someone who recognizes the ear related stuff.???

Has anyone with ear and TMJ issues gone to both ear doctors and TMJ specialists and found either to be very helpful with both issues?

thanks for replying, snh39....im having terrible trouble finding a specialist in the UK that actually knows and understands the links. My ENT doc (on the National Health Service) won't even give a proper examination. I tried to explain when during my appointment with the ENT (its was his assistant the seen me for about 3 minutes) that i have tinnitus, constant clicking and popping when i swallow or move my head, crunching in my jaw and pain afterwards, my jaw moves drastically to one side when i open my mouth, my jaw locks open to name a few symptoms. I'm so sick of trying to find a doctor that wants to help or at least investigate my problems...its such physical drain.

thanks again for replying.

kris.
