i had my baby 5 weeks ago and next week i'm going in for my 6 weeks check up. so i was interested in the IUC mirena for birth control instead of the pill. my question is, will they insert it if i ask for it that day when i go in or do i have the schedule another appointment? also i was wondering what other peoples experiences were with it and it they had any side effect? thanks!

Hi kirsten07 ~ Congrats on the new little one! I hope you're getting sleep! As far as your question is concerned, I got the copper IUD exactly two months after my daughter was born. I was thinking about doing it at the 6 week check up like you, because I thought I was "all healed up" and I felt great! When my doctor examined me (I had an episiotomy and some tearing), it didn't exactly feel too great. It actually felt quite uncomfortable, so I decided not to even go there. You may want to give it another month just to heal.
Also, some doctors will not insert it until you have had your first period following a pregnancy. Even then, you will be asked to take a pregnancy test as a precaution.
If you really think that you want it, they may do it. Call before you go in! My thing was "If I'm paying already, why not get it done?" But, I'm actually glad that I waited. I needed my body to readjust to the overwhelming amount of hormones that were leaving my body. Pregnancy is not to be taken lightly, as I'm sure you know.
Good luck in your decisions. Again, congratulations! :D

Kirsten~ I had my Mirena inserted a year after my baby was born, so can't speak to the specifics if there would be any additional healing time to the process due to the birth of your baby. (Congrats!!!!) But I can say that after my Mirena was inserted, and after I had it replaced (have to have it replaced every 5 yrs and just had that done this past year) I experienced quite a lot of cramping for about 3-4 hours and had a typical period bleeding for about 2-3 days. After that, no side effect (no migranes like I used to get, no weight gain, no moodiness, and NO periods!) My OBGYN and many of her staff have it as well and just rave over it. I would highly recommend it to anyone that has had a child, does not like the hassle of daily meds, and also doesn't want the hassle of a period each month! :D
