I am on HRT. It has helped the night sweats and hot flashes. But my breasts are swollen(larger) and I have gained around 5 pounds in my midsection. Is anyone else experiencing this? I really need to figure out if they are worth taking or not.

kt38351,
Yes, hormones can affect water retention and the distribution of fat on the body. You might want to experiment with other brands or forms of hormones before you decide to give up on them altogether. And you certainly would not be the first woman who decides that the side effects are not worth the relief of hot flashes. :)

Thanks Rheanna
I was just thinking last night how terrible it would be to go back to the night sweats and hot flashes. They were so bad that I was waking up every hour on the hour during the night. My Dr. and I are experimenting with the strength of the HRT's right now. Hopefully we will get it down pat in the near future. My breasts don't feel as sore this morning. Maybe it's going to be a one week a month thing.

I started HRT about a month now. I was having hot-flashes one after the next and felt like I had a constant fever, nauseated, night sweats and waking up all time of the night which made me irritable. I am on Premarin (estrogen only) and we started out at .3 which is a small dosage. I am now at .625 and we have decided to stick with this since it is working. I have noticed the weight gain (I can use the extra breast weight) :) I have enrolled in the YMCA and now that I am feeling much better, plan on getting into a regular exercise program and drink lots of fluids like water. I think you and your doctor just has to try the different strengths until you can find the right one. I asked my doctor if the hormone test can determine the strength you need and he told me two women can have the same estrogen level but one can have hot-flashes while the other has none. To each her own but I feel much better and can finally function again so I am going to stick with this and perhaps in time, try to lower the dosage.

I have been on the combo/patch for 6 weeks and it has helped with the hot flashes and the night sweats are gone. My breast are not sore and I have gained some weight not much. I feel much better physically but I am feeling some what depressed, not bad. Have any of you just feel down. It has not helped with my sleeping though still do not sleep well and oh yea my periods are back, yuck!!!!! But my Dr said with my osteoprosis
the combo patch would help with that also...We will see. Depression or not depression.

I believe that the depression is part of the change in the hormone levels. I hear so many women mention they have depression, anxiety, or just feeling like crying when they start menopause. I have dealt with depression for years so I have been treated for it as a mental illness. There are also natural products out there that you may be able to take like St. John's Wort. Consult your doctor if the depression gets really bad.
