11 years ago was dianosed with mild ms, is there such a thing? nothing much has happened since 1997,, left with tingling and tight feeling in one hand, typing with that hand not like it used to be, poor balance, is there anyone out there who has experienced the same? my sister in Australia has ms and is in a wheelchair, she was 23 when diagnosed I was 46.

Hi, Lisa. The only formal types of MS dxes at this point are the 4 different categories. There is some controversy about the term/concept "benign" MS -- more doctors than not say there is no such thing/dx. I'm with the majority on this one. HOWEVER, it is very possible to have a mild disease course. I have RRMS and right now, very few sx on a daily basis. I am thankful that my sx are mild and if they still are in 20 years, the only thing I'll find myself saying (unless more is known) is that the course of my disease has been mild. I can't imagine saying I have "mild MS" -- no one can really predict anything with this beyond a shadow of a doubt. I remember in a conversation about the concept of benign MS, someone said "MS is benign - until it isn't".

I am glad you are doing so well and I hope it continues forever! It's possible. :)

Count your blessings if you aren't having a lot of symptoms. :D

I have also been told I have benign MS and been told I have a mild case. I was dx'd in March 06 so I haven't had to deal with this for too long as of yet. I will say that my symptoms are 'mild'. Knock on wood, I've only had one flare up since initial dx and the symptom was exactly the same as my initial one, a weak heavy left leg. I do have numbness down most of the left side of my body which has never gone away though but it doesn't bother me. I know some day it will worsen but I hope that some day is 30 years from now. I don't know how I feel about benign MS either. I do believe though that the area the lesions affect has everything to do with how severe your symptoms are, but why the lesions attack some areas on some people and not on others not a clue.

I've been told that I also have benign MS and that it's really a misnomer as there is no such thing. Benign MS is in my mind is MS in it's infancy stages, where I was getting symptoms once year in November. Since starting Avonex, I've skipped my Nov symptoms.

Hi, i am sure i have had mild symptoms for many years- i remember in my 20s having an episode of bright glowing lights and headaches- not like a migraine aura. My eyes were tested by a specialist. I wonder now if that was the start. Have also had very jumpy reflexes for many many years, as well as feeling weak and getting very sore muscles from little exertion. Do you recall the first lot of "symptoms"?

I had bright lights as well Mary, as I'm sure you've seen me mention before. I too think this was the beginning. I guessed that it was migraine at the time, but I never did develop into the headache, and I never went to a doctor or specialist at the time to find out more.
