I have noticed that because my bladder works in overdrive, I don't drink much. Sometimes I get through the day with one cup of coffee and maybe a sip of something else. Other days I drink maybe a 20 oz glass of sugar free lemonade (and the coffee). I think I just avoid fluids because I know what will happen if I drink freely. Do any of you notice doing something like that? I can use the br at home, drive 3 miles to my parents and have to use theirs upon arrival. I just can't bring myself to drink anymore because of the pain and urgency it causes.

Kim, I'm a coffee lover myself, but it's a diuretic. Which means, it'll make you go more than say, a glass of water will.

I'd suggest cutting the coffee, if at all possible, and focus on water. 1 cup of coffee isn't going to hurt you, but dehydrating yourself by not drinking enough water will.

Good luck hun!

LOL, I always say, I drink water, it's in my coffee! I can't say I can give up coffee as the caffiene headache isn't my idea of a good time but maybe I will try using less grounds and bump up my fluids a little. Thank you :)

My bladder cycles through overdrive and "granny-low" no matter how much water I drink. About 1-2 times a week I have my caffeine soda (my indulgence), but it does not change my bladder works. If I am going through a bad day, my bladder will be ready to empty not long after I have a drink.

Caffeine can indeed play a role in your overdrive, but it is not necessarily the lone culprit in my opinion.

If you can stand it, I've found that caffeine-free drinks make things easier.

I struggle with this too. My bladder is only a big problem when my MS is acting up, and it seems that having one sip of anything will send me to the bathroom. I love coffee and can't live without it, so I try to just deal with it. It's a pain though, and I'm really bored with being in the bathroom so much! All I really drink is coffee and gatorade.

I Know Exactly How You Feel. I'm In The Bathroom Every Five Minute After I Drink Something.

This happens to me all the time... I can go the entire day without a glass of anything and STILL need to use the bathroom..... my neurologist says I have "neurogenic bladder" ......... and relates it to my ms... I know its horrible for us to avoid getting the hydration we need but constantly going to the restroom isn't at all my cup of tea....

LOL- I had to laugh when I read your post, because I totally understand what you mean!! My bladder problems always seem to get worse under stress, too and it makes life hard, especially at social events.

Case in point, my husband was nice enough to invite me to go to a convention with him last year, for work. We never had a honeymoon and we had our kids pretty quickly after marriage, so I thought, yeah, let's go! So, I'm meeting all these people and we're all eating and drinking. I'm freaked out because one of my most 'painful' symptoms (for me) is the fact that I can't remember anything anymore. So, I'm super stressed out about forgetting someone's name, etc. I should say that this convention was in Las Vegas, in a casino. A HUGE casino!! Although, the restroom's were "close", they were also about a mile away. I found it hard to even want to eat or drink! I have Putnam-Dana syndrome and diverticulitis so I get the 'ria', too. Pretty much within ten minutes of eating I have to use the facilities and FAST!! Talk about embarassing!!

Everyone was drinking (at the open bar!) and I had to be so careful about that because alcohol especially goes right through me and I have a hard time keeping it in at all. Long story short........there were a couple of times that I was thankful for bladder contol products!!

I just so badly wanted to 'appear' normal. I didn't want people to be like, "Gee, why aren't you eating or drinking, Rebecca?" It's just horrible to feel so self-concious about something that should be normal, ie. food and drink!!!

As far as, day to day, I have to drink tons, because I tend to faint if I'm even a little bit low on fluid, plus they think that I have Sjogren's. so my mouth, throat are dry. Also, I have dysphagia, so I NEED to drink to be able to eat.

I'm never far from the toilet though!!! Too, true..........
