I am writing this for two reasons. First, I am having a tonsillectomy this coming Friday (4.25.08), and I am really nervous. I am 27 years old, and I have heard (and read) that the older a person is, the harder recovery is. So, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or words of wisdom, or if there is somebody out there who is going to have a tonsillectomy in the near future.
Also, my tonsillectomy is not going to be under general anesthesia, but rather local anesthesia (and sedation), so I will be awake. That is just how my doctor does it...Does anyone have experience with a tonsillectomy under local?
Thanks!
Mer~

Hi,
Hope your tonsillectomy went ok. I'm having mine taken out in 3 weeks time. Hope your recovery goes well. Let us know how you are.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for asking how it went! I am sorry to say that it did not go as smoothly as I had hoped. Actually, the tonsillectomy went well. I was awake, didn't really bleed, and I even have a picture with me holding my tonsils! I had arrived at the hospital at 5:15 am, and I went home that morning around 11.
Mid afternoon I went to lay down and the back of my throat felt wet. I called my husband in to look, and started spitting out mouthfuls of blood. I freaked out, my husband remained calm and called our surgeon, who referred us to one of his colleagues, whose office is close to our home. By the time I got there the bleeding had mostly stopped. He cauterized the area and I was home within an hour. Then, around 4pm the other side of my throat started bleeding, so my husband called the surgeon and he asked that we come to his office, which is about 35 minutes away, which was OK since the bleeding tends to stop on its own. We went to his office, and he spent about an hour (the worst hour of my life) cauterizing both sides of my throat. On the way home, however, I began bleeding again. We turned around, and this time the bleeding had not stopped by the time we got to the office, so he saw the amount we were actually dealing with. He also saw that it was bleeding from way back down my throat, and I could not deal with any more cauterization back there. He said we should go back in the ER, so he followed us to the hospital.
My husband and parents were with me. It was supposed to take 30 min, and I would again be under local anesthesia. Well, the last thing I remember is a lot of blood, my surgeon shaking and panicking, the doctors trying to figure out a vascular surgeon who "could get there in time" and a tube being stuck down my throat. Oh, and the blood, they thought, may be coming from my carotid artery. I thought I was going to die. I didn't die. I woke up and spent the night in the ICU and came home yesterday morning, in a lot of pain, and with a new perspective on life.
So, apparently this bleeding thing happens in 1 - 5% of patients, and it is something that is a known risk, so I am not trying to say that it will happen to lots of others who decide to go through with a tonsillectomy. I do think it highlights the importance of being vigilant in looking out for problems after surgery. I hope there is no more bleeding and that someday soon I will feel like this was worth it.
I wish others luck with this surgery, as it seems that usually it is not that bad.

Just got mine taken out Thursday the 24th and sooo glad I found this thread. I'd looked at a few others before I went in and they were all out of date.
Anyhow, despite all of the horror stories I've read, mind really hasn't been unbearable thus far and today was day 5 for me. Today I switched over to liquid extra strength Tylenol instead of my Tylenol w/ codeine and that seems to be working thus far. The pain was worse for me on day 3 probably as far as swallowing goes. Today my biggest problem has been my neck and right under my chin being incredibly tense. my other problem is that my uvula is still swollen, which from what i've read, IS common. never the less it's very annoying. another thing i've noticed is that i snore HORRIBLY now, i think mostly because my throat is so swollen but i'm going to be pretty pissed if i snore worse after having them out than i did when i had them.
i'd recommend drinking as much water and eating as much ice as possible. i've been chewing on ice non stop.
any recommendations on getting the uvula swelling to go down?

hi beatthediese,
Sounds like your recovery is going well -- nice and uneventful. I, too, have noticed that I snore now, but hopefully that will go away. The beginning of my recovery was difficult, but since saturday I would say I am on a normal course...i just hope it stays that way. as for the swollen uvula, i would say ice is the only thing i know of, and you said you have that covered. did you by any chance have swelling all around your neck?
I have been eating lots of ice and ice pops. what sorts of foods have you been able to handle? and switching to tylenol is good. i tried to do that due to nausea, but it still hurt too much, so i just cut back on the lortab and switched between that and tylenol. it is kind of a balancing act, enough pain relief but no nausea.
Anyway, I hope you feel better quickly. :D

Oh, and Jane, I don't want my experience to dissuade you from your tonsillectomy, as an experience such as mine truly is the exception and not the norm. And now my recovery is going much better. :)

Hi everyone :-)
Mer I have to say you're much stronger than me. I never would of went through my tonsillectomy without anesthesia that knocked me out. I'm only 18, and I had mine out when I was 16. I know I wasn't an adult, but I've been through it and remember it well. Best of luck to all of you in recovery for being brave enough to get it done! It was one of the best choices I've made for myself so far. Recovery is tough but the outcome is worth it.
My recovery was very tough...no where near as tough as your first day, but I did wake up to a mouth full of blood on the 7th day. And I'm underweight, so not being able to eat made me so weak I couldn't walk or anything. My mom force fed me cream of chicken soup...now I can't stand that stuff!
Keep us updated!

Good Morning...it's 2 AM and having slept all day, I can't sleep NOW, so I figured I'd start my post on my experiences of an adult tonsillectomy...I know you're thrilled.
I will say this..going into the surgery, I was very, very nervous. All the bad posts and horror stories I read prepared me for the worst.
Day 1:
I arrived at the hospital @ 6 Am, surgery was at 8:30 Am. I had a little trouble with the IV...but I have a hard time finding a vein by nature. The vein they did find had a nerve wrapped around it, so when she went to stick me, she hit the nerve...not pleasant.
Surgery lasted 45 minutes. The doctor was surprised to say...I did not bleed at all, shocking. However, my tonsils were very, very scarred from the many times that I have been sick.
After surgery, I was told I'd be kept 3-4 hours. They kept me 1.5 hours and I got to go home.
The first day, I slept a lot and drank tons of water. The doctor gave me liquid loritab and zithromax. I also invested in some treats they normally give to kids, tetracaine lollipops. If you don't know what these are, ask your doctor about them. Essentially, it's a numbing lollipop. You have to go to an apothecary pharmacist for them, but they are So worth it. You swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds and it numbs the back of your throat to ease the pain.
I won't get into too much detail other than that I'm approaching Day 8 and just now really starting to get into some pain. The doctor upped my pain meds to tyvol (oxcycodone) and the pain has transferred to my ears now too. Ear aches suck.
But now on to the great thing...
Helpful Hints:
Foods that are GREAT to eat:
Kraf mac and cheese REALLY cooked--soft
Idahoian Mashed Potatoes
Pudding
Ramen Noodles
Frosty's
Scrambled eggs
Things you should ask for that the doctor may not give you:
Tetracaine lollipops (Mine cost $10 for 2 and after 7 days, I still have a whole one left)
Things to have:
A humidifier
An ice pack for your neck
Crushed Ice (easier to chew then cubes)
Juicy Fruit Gum--helps to chew gum once your ears start throbbing or aching. Do NOT get anything minty or cinnamony..it WILL burn.
Cepakot-S--This helps the bowels. I was skeptical as the first day I had NO problems...then 3 days passed...you WILL need help.
Liquid Tylenol--get it...take it..you will get a fever most likely.
Cotton balls and baby oil--When those ear aches come along...LIGHTLY soak some cotton balls in baby oil and warm them SLIGHTLY in the microwave..don't burn yourself. Ring them out and squish them like ear plugs in your ear...it helps to calm the constant throbbing
Someone to take care of you...I know this sounds stupid, but at the age of 26, I have depended more on my husband and mother the past week then anything else. You may THINK you can do it alone...but trust me...I was glad for someone to help me with the little things (laundry...cleaning...etc).
I'm halfway there...so we'll see how it goes...so don't fret the tonsil thing so much...I was so scared going in and it really, when thinking about it and reading the stories on here..has NOT been that bad. Go in fighting and you may just come out fine.
I know I did
Cheers!

I am 31 tears old and on postop day 14 from my tonsillectomy. I have to say this was the worst experience of my life and it has been a hard ride.
There is a 1 in 20 chance of bleeding after the operation and I bled twice. After my initial surgery, I started throwing up blood and had to be taken back to the OR. This was so scary but I was told that my tonsils were so scarred that I had a lot of bleeding that was difficult to stop. I spent 4 nights in the hospital and was sent home. The morning of postop day 6, I woke up and was bleeding, not a lot but went to the hospital and went for a third surgery. I was then in the hospital for another 6 days for observation to ensure I didn't start bleeding again. I am happy to say that I haven't bled anymore but it really caused me a lot of distress.
My throat is still sore although I don't need much for pain besides tylenol. It just seems to be taking such a long time to heal - I didn't realize it would take this long. I still need to take it easy and I am going stir crazy sitting here watching video after video. My doctor told me not to eat anything hot, no hot showers, no lifting. I see him again next week.
Don't be too scared by reading my story - I am a rarity when it comes to the bleeding. At least you know that it can be corrected if it happens. I do feel better now, most of the scar tissue is gone but i have some stitches from my last surgery that still need to dissolve. But i think it is good to prepare yourself for these kind of circumstances. At least the bleeding was stopped before it got worse!
I currently live in Germany but I am Canadian. I am actually supposed to be flying to Canada in 2 and half weeks to work (I am a hospital pharmacist). I just hope that I will make a full recovery by then.
I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. As a result of the surgery, I have developed a small through and through hole in my throat on the right side of my uvula on the fleshy part. I have had 2 ENT's tell me it can happen as a result of the surgery and that it will not cause me any problems. I am just wondering if anyone else has this "hole" or if they have ever heard of this happening before?
I wish everyone the best with their recovery!

K3ya, Thank you for your kind words. I was heavily sedated, so though I was awake, I was calm and pretty unaware. Today is day 7 for me. So far, no more bleeding, and I hope that continues!
Clegg, I am just beginning to get horrible ear pain. When did your doc up your meds? I am on Lortab syrup, and it doesn't last very long. Does your new medicine last longer? The ear pain is really HORRIBLE. I hope you are feeling better!
Goodbyetonsils, WOW. I can relate to your ordeal, and it SUCKS! I am glad that you hadn't had any more bleeding after your THIRD surgery. I am wondering how you are feeling now.
I cannot wait for this whole ordeal to be over, but, except for the first 24 hours, it was tolerable for me. I wish everyone continued good recovery!! :)

I hate to say that I have little if any trouble with my recovery other than for about 2 1/2 days when my scabs were coming off. The only thing I can suggest is calling your doctor for a stronger prescription. The medicine he gave me was for Tyvol which is Oxycodne (spelling is wrong). It is MUCh stronger than Lortab. Basically it's in pill form...but it supposedly can last 4-5 hours at a time. I could go about 5 hours before having to retake it.
As for the ear aches..yah, that's probably the worst thing for me to deal with. I had a LOT of ear problems when I was younger. I had my adenoids out (the sister to the tonsil) when I was 4 and they left my tonsils in. So when the pain transferred from my tonsils to my ears, I thought I would die. Ironically, if you take some cotton balls and soak them in baby oil and heat them up in a bowl in the microwave so they are WARM...NOT HOT, and squeeze them out a bit and twist them like ear plugs and put them in your ears, they will help cut the pain a bit. And you can just keep reusing them. I probably reheated the same ones about 15 times. Another alternative or additional item to use with the baby oil is a good ol' fashioned heating pad. You can leave that on for hours and if you can some how cocoon your ears in it...you'll feel MUCh better.
I certainly hope you feel better. I marvel that I have recovered in about 10 days. I went out to eat tonight and had pretty much normal food. I am back to Lortab and will be switching to Liquid Tylenol on Monday I hope before I go back to work on Wednesday.
I can only merit my quick recovery to a lot of preemptive planning before the surgery. I did a lot of research about remedies and things to help cut the pain. Aside from the fact that I just didn't have any issues with bleeding, etc. I think I got lucky.
Let me know if you need anymore helpful hints. I'm not much help, but I know how you feel!
Take Care-

Mer27 - I am on post op day 17 and doing much better than before. I am still unable to eat regular food but I am able to eat pieces of cheese and lunch meat type food, noodles and anything else that is soft. I still can't have anything citrus as it burns the left side of my throat but this was the side that bled and I think they cauterized there. It seems to get better everyday though. I still worry about bleeding but I guess you can't blame me since it happened twice.
As for the ear pain, I know what you are going through. I went through the same thing and it was especially bad at night when I was trying to sleep. Just make sure you take your meds around the clock. The pain won't totally go away but it does get better and it is completely normal. I hope you are doing well and that you make a speeder recovery than me.
To everyone else, I read that it can take up to a month to be completely healed. What does anyone else know about healing time? My white scabs are gone but sometimes there is some white stuff appearing (not much, just a little) - I assume this is just part of the healing process? I just thought I wouldn't be seeing that anymore at day 17.

Post Op Day 10
So I'm now on day 10 post op and today has by FAR been the best. It's hurts like crazy to yawn or sneeze so I try and fight those off. Still some tightness and slight throb in under my chin, up my jaw line, and in my ears, but nothing outrageous. For the most part the only thing still bugging me is my swollen uvula and it's FINALLY starting to go down. My throat hurts a little when I swallow and it's still tight but not unbearable at all.
It's been a strange experience. One day feeling like your better and the next being worse. I think I'm finally on the upswing of things though.
Today I ate soup and Chinese food and it was awesome!
Things I've been doing:
Early on I ate ice chips all day long and anytime I woke up in the night
Jello
Ramen Noodles
Chicken Broth
Scrambled Eggs
Ice Pack for the Next (I would use ice, then put a heating pad on it directly afterwards)
I slept all the way through last night without waking up for pain med so that was a wonderful feeling this morning.
I'd say it's not near as bad as what I was imagining before I had it done.
Good luck to all of those recovering and all of those going in for surgery! There IS a light at the end of a tunnel and I don't wish it was a train headed to run me over anymore either!

Post Op day 8.
Hey all,
ummm i'm doing pretty well. It not so much as hurts as much as it stings when I eat or drink things...I think those must be the scabs? yes? any ideas?
It feels much better today, but I had to take my differential Equations Final this afternoon and that was pretty unbearable.
I am absolutely starving but i'm not sure what I should eat, I think i'll try some soup, but i'm craving PIZZA! i can't wait till hopefully next week i can start slow on pizza.

Hi everyone,
Beatthediese, it sounds like you are doing well. Chinese food! I am jealous. Today is day 8, and I am feeling quite a bit better, but as you say, I have a good day followed by a not-so-good day, so I don't want to get my hopes up.
Navyguy, I think that the stinging you are talking about is definitely scabs coming off, at least that is what I have attributed it to. Pizza sounds sooo good. I am hungry. I had a few very soft steak fries today, which were good. I can't believe you took a final today. That must have been tough. Are you on pain meds? I have a paper due Monday, and I worked on it a bit today, but it was slow going...
I go back to work on Monday, which will be interesting. So this weekend is full of rest and paper writing.
Anyway, take care people! I hope you all continue on a speedy recovery! :)

Mer27,
hey ya get this. I had two finals on Wed (Ethics, Physics II), a western civ II final yesterday which I wrote a 10 page paper for earlier this week earlier on in my recovery (sucked), and today i had a Differential Equations Final. Monday I have an Oceans II final and Tuesday I have a meteorology Final haha. Then I'm done.
Mer so you're on day 8 huh, I hope these scabs come off soon, i'm so hungry. So after the scabs off it won't hurt much or stink anymore? Because even drinking water right now stings sometimes.
And yes, all of my Finals were taken while on Percocet narcotics haha

Wow, Rob, how do you think you have done on the finals? I suppose being on painkillers would make it interesting...
I hope that once the scabs are gone the stinging and everything will go away. I think it might be from the rawness that is left once the scabs fall off, so maybe after it heals up a little more.
Anyway, back to paper. Good luck on the rest of your finals!

Mer,
ya I looked with a flashlight last night and could really see where the scabs were falling off, and places where they haven't yet. I just want it to be over with, i'm kinda sad about it because i'm flying to go see my girlfriend on Tuesday for 5 days at her college in Arizona and i'm "supposed" to be helping her to move out of her sorority, but looks like I won't be able to do much lifting, my main priority is that i'm healed enough to have a good time and EAT, and maybe drink. but we'll see as time goes I guess

i'm on post op day 9 and i really wana eat.
Do you think pancakes would be ok?

Wow dude.. 18pounds? What has been your diet?
Pancakes are relatively soft and shouldn`t cause any problems if you chew well and avoid crusts. If it were me however, I wouldn`t eat them, but that`s partly cuz I`ve suffered from bleeding 3 times after my initial surgery.. :(
About the weight, I know from watching "Survivorman"(;)) that the body first consumes the extra fat, then the muscles. I was also concerned about this, and after my third week I`d lost about 8pounds myself. But I hope I can work out again as soon as possible..
Gonna ask my doc. tomorrow hopefully..
Hope you heal up nicely :)

yo soupguy,
thanks man. Ya I'm a lacrosse player, swimmer, runner, I do a lot of workouts.
I am 6ft 3in at 195# pre op. now at day 9 i'm 177#.
lol i think i lost a lot of weight because i eat so many carbs because of my endurance workouts, this was like a total shock to my body and my metabolism. I have a very fast metabolism so ya.
I think i'm going to try the pancakes, i haven't had any bleeding, and i'll make sure they are drenched with syrup so that it is very soft. I need to eat, this is getting rediculous
to think I have to put on my uniform and fly cross country on tuesday is killing me, i've been on covalescent sick leave because of the surgery haha. I'm in the Navy, well I go to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Navyguy,
Eat whatever you can. About day 6 I finally forced myself to start eating real food and while it was very uncomfortable (mostly because of the enormous uvula) I started feeling much better I think because I FINALLY had some food in me. One thing that has worked well for me is steamed vegetables. I would just steam them until they were extremely soft. That way I'm getting some protein and fiber etc. Today was day 11 for me, last night I had grilled chicken and today I had some BBQ. Tomorrow is my post op visit and I'm crossing my fingers that he okays me to start working out again!
Chin up everybody, it gets better.

Hi, I just registered here. I am 7 days after surgery. My scabs starting coming off today. I noticed when I was looking in a mirror that a spot was kind of red and I thought it had scabs there before. I wasn't sure, but I started to get a tingle in that side. Just a while ago the tingle changed to a stinging, sharp pain. I looked again and had a small amount of blood there. I started drinking a lot more ice water and it looks like it is OK. I was wondering since the ENT Doctors worry about bleeding do I need to call them if it is minor or only if it keeps going? I don't want to cough up blood and aspirate it, but if it is a small amount I don't want to go to the hospital. Thanks for the help and for sharing your stories. This has been the most pain I have ever had. Hearing that a lot of others have the same issues as I do makes me feel a little better. I am 27 now and started having trouble 17 years ago. I just hope in a week or so I will be over it.

burgerking,
don't think i'd worry about a tiny bit. there were several mornings that i woke up and hawked a load of junk of that did contain a little bit of blood. i know you're more likely to bleed if you don't stay hydrated so if it was dry, that might have been what it was.
on a side note, and apparently this is common too, i just woke up this morning parched and took a swig of water and it went up my nose!! not a pleasant feeling and i hope it never happens in public but apparently that can happy while you're in the process of getting used to all of that extra room. just one more WONDERFUL happening post tonsillectomy!

Thanks for answering me! This forum has been a great help. I have had water come out my nose a few times since the surgery too. The first time it happened I had taken a good sized drink and I couldn't swallow. I was about to spit it out and it all ran out my nose. There are so many odd things that happen. We should all write a book to help future people getting this done!

hi azburgerking,
I agree that a little spot of blood is ok. I bled the first day, and it was gushing...very obvious that it was a problem. The middle of the first week was quite painful, so hopefully you will be feeling better every day.
It is helpful to read that others are going through similar situations, and are willing to share their experiences! :)

I feel like I have gone backwards, and my throat is super sore and I feel really tired and blah. Is this normal, having a bad day after I have been feeling better? Did I go back to work too soon? Well, in any case, it is FRUSTRATING. ...okay, done complaining. :)
Hopefully tomorrow, which is a full day of class, will be better. For now, back into bed.
I hope everyone else is doing well.

ok it's 4 in the morning. that's a huge issue from me. I love my sleep. :-(
Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and would like to share my recent experiences.
I just had my T&A (adult adenotonsillectomy) this afternoon, about 12 hours ago, and I would love to know how I will regain a good sleeping pattern and a speedier recovery.
I was fine up until about midnight. so much for that.
Right as I was coming out of anesthesia, they gave me some painkiller that started with an F, and I wish I had it, because that was the best I've felt yet, and my neck was covered in ice pack, which I've worn non stop since then. The doc have me tylenol cod. and augmentin (apparently my tonsils were filled with puss---is this pretty common?), and the tylenol doesn't seem to be doing much. I'd really like to numb this, but I'm scared that if I sleep through the numbness, I'll regret it when I wake up since I will have not drank anything for those hours.
My uvula is swollen as well, and as much ice water as I've been taking in, it doesn't seem to be going down either. I'm even afraid I might choke on it..which is another reason I cant rest for more than about 15 minutes.
Right now I'm leaning towards numbness. Is my reasoning regarding the tradeoff between later pain and numbness sound? Is there a way to achieve both numbness and no additional pain from where I started?
Is sucrets a bad idea?

I'd call the dr. and ask for either percoset or roxicet (the liquid perc). I have no idea how you people are able to get by on just tyl w/cod! With the roxicet I feel no pain unless I'm swallowing, and then the worst it was about a 7...my fault for going an extra half hour and trying to make the rox last longer.
I had my tonsils out Monday 5/5 and with the rox I have no trouble sleeping. It's the waking myself up every 2 hours to drink that gets me. Even being up a good portion of the night last night I still feel rested this morning.
My ENT sent me home with all sorts of things for pain management and I am very grateful! He gave me prednesone for swelling and that helps sooo much. My uvula was also really swollen like yours but by yesterday morning it was much better. I don't know if that was because of the pred or just normal healing. He also gave me tetracaine lollipops, but I'm saving those for when the scabs come off. It can't hurt to call the ENT and say that the T3 isn't cutting it! At least with this board you can be armed with specific information on what you want.
I forgot to add, if the pain isn't being managed you won't be able to drink like you should and thus increase possibility of bleeding. Let the dr. know it hurts too much to drink like you should and see if that gets you something stronger.

Hi Again Everyone,
So that first night was pretty painful, but today is already a lot better.
All of yesterday was pretty sucky. I had a pudding cup (which went down well), 2 freeze pops (too sweet for my taste), and a couple of spoons of icecream (also a little too sweet for my taste). Does that sound like a pretty good appetite for one day out of surgery? I also drank lots of water and had a lot of icecubes.
This morning I've only had a pudding cup, but I think I'll be able to get another one and possibly a slimfast drink down before the day is over.
I still have the icepack around the front my neck (and the back of the neck is kind of hurting...not sure why). My uvula is still pretty swollen, but doesn't bother me as much as it did yesterday, which is why I was able to sleep last night.
My body feels achy and I feel like I'm swallowing mucus because my chest feels kind of heavy. And I can't spit up anything because my uvula blocks anything substantial from coming up. Is this a problem?
I was also able to blow my nose this morning to try to get whatever it is hanging around the back of my throat but I don't want to do it too hard, because I'm still not too sure about what my adenoids being out means for my nose, if anything. Anyone know?
