I had a Brostrom done last June, and it went well. I was FWB 3 weeks after the surgery, seriously dancing about 5 months post-op...The only thing that I've had trouble with was running. My surgeon told me that it could be up to a year before running was OK with me, and not to run if it caused pain. Makes sense, right? So I've avoided running as much as possible, but then on Wednesday, my gym teacher basically said that I had to run (do the pacer test), or I'd fail the final. Since failing gym isn't exactly an option, I ran...And now I'm seriously regretting it. After going across the gym width wise 23 times, my ankle was dead. It hurt, and was not cool, so I stopped (my teacher, by the way, was disappointed that I didn't get more but HELLO! I have a bad ankle). Yesterday, I was going to wear a brace, but forgot, and that was bad. Today, I'm wearing my Aircast. I'm hoping that if I rest it over the weekend (well, as much as I can), it'll be OK, but should I go to the doctor if it isn't better by Monday?

Hmm. Running in a straight line probably would have been ok, but running back and forth across the gym, turning a lot...
Definitely go as easy on it as possible for the next few days, try some ice.
Did it swell up or bruise, or is it just sore?
Calling the doctor on Monday if it's not better sounds like a sensible plan.

It's a bit swollen, but not much...Although, that's probably due to the fact that my ankle basically stopped swelling like 2 years ago because it's gotten messed up so many times...Even after my surgery I was barely swollen (even my surgeon was impressed). ROM is a bit impaired too.
And yes...I'm extremely pissed at my teacher! I mean, I've told him multiple times throughout the year that I can't run. I'm not making crap up, it's just that I HAD SURGERY ON MY ANKLE. He doesn't seem to get that. So, just to make him mad, I might just get a note saying I can't do gym for the rest of the year.

I would have already gotten a note a long time ago. And I'd keep updating the note with a new one just to remind him! And, if you explain to him, that if you hurt your ankle more during PE, then HE is responsible for you having to have more surgery....maybe then he'll leave you alone. Maybe you should tell him you'll be meeting with the principal to discuss this issue??

The thing is, I was doing OK in gym...Not really doing running even in games that included it, whatever...But then the pacer test (part of the physical fitness test) is complete running from the start, and my teacher basically said that if I didn't do it, I'd fail. He honestly thinks that it's BS that I can't run...But that's completely not true! I used to do track and I'm not this year because of my ankle.
But I will definitely be getting a note...My mom is going to call and make an appointment with a sports doctor tomorrow. She said she'd call my surgeon, but getting in to see her will be a month, and this sports doctor is good - he treated my ankle until it got to the point that he couldn't, so he gave me a referral to the surgeon.

I would get a note from your doctor and bring it to the Principal. That is absurd that he would force you to run even though he's aware of your ankle problems. If you can't get an appointment right away you can always ask your Doc to write a note and leave it at the reception desk for you to pick up.

I'm going in tomorrow morning. I have gym before the appt, but my parents will write me a note to get out of that for the day, and I'm sure the doctor will give me a note for a couple weeks at the very least.

Maybe have your parents meet with the gym teacher as well?? Being a parent myself, that would be the first thing I would have done had you been my child.

My parents probably will do something about it...But I'm not sure.

I had the same problem with my gym teacher last year after I had recontructive foot surgery. He wanted me to do stuff even though i was still in my boot. After two months he was getting annoyed with me. We were dancing at the time and he made me dance with my boot! I had to try and two-step and fox trot in a boot. It was rediculous. I dont understand why they make us do that. Do they really think we are faking it. My mom, also, was very upset and made many phone calls to my school.

I swear my teacher doens't even believe that I had surgery...Even though I've told him that I would show him my 2 inch scar.

In general, I think all PE teachers have a stick up their rear and the mentality that nothing is better than PE in the public education system. Seriously, are they really doing any educating and making us more rounded people by forcing us the exercise. I'm not saying exercise is a bad thing, but the way they go about motivating is not the best and the way they blow off true injury is appalling.
Many a battle I've had with PE teachers, especially the male ones in high school and I only had to do high school PE for 3 semesters thanks the "PE Exempt." The best win was getting approval to square dance. I had done it for 2 days before the holidays and the day we returned to school. While sitting out PE I paid close attention and had friends teach me outside of PE. The deal with the PE department was that if I could pass the final test (occurring the day after the meeting) that they would give me back my lost PE credit. HA! I WON! A+!
It will all work out. Walk out and straight to the office. Refuse to go back until a meeting is held.

I talked to my AP (associate principal) today about it, so I'm pretty sure that something will be done...Especially since she's the one who sought me out, not the other way around.
