View Full Version : Could someone help me, please?

Here's a little back story. I developed an obsessive thirst a couple weeks ago. I thought it might be diabetes and decided to call the Dr. Well I put it off until this past Monday when I almost passed out in the shower. Called, got in, had some blood drawn.

The next AM I got a call from the Dr to go to the ER immediatly - my blood sugar leve came back at 650!!

So I went and 8 hours later they sent me home at 338.

The next day I bought a meter and that night my level was 224. The next AM fasting was 167. Since then it's bounced around between 150 and 220. The Dr feels that with the Glucoflage starting to kick in over the next couple of days, I should be okay without insulin.

Here's the problem. I feel worse than I did on Monday when my level was 650. Why? If my level is coming down why do I feel so bad? I'm sick to my stomach, I feel a little light headed, I'm having problems remembering. I can't think of words.

Can anyone shed some light on what's going on?

Thanks.

The change in your blood glucose can make you feel symptoms of hypoglycemia even if your numbers are in range or even high. You have to remember that your numbers have probably been way high for a long time, so even getting down to the 300s is a huge change for your body. Give it a few days for your body to get accustomed to being back in range, and hopefully the symptoms will stop. If they get worse or don't go away, please call your doctor. Good luck and feel better.

In addition, the stomach upset could be from the glucophage, especially if you're also experiencing diarrhea, gas and bloating. Those symptoms usually go away in a short while (couple of weeks, maybe) and if they don't, you can discuss with your doctor cutting the dose in half for a week or two, and then increasing it back up again.

I have a couple of questions, though, Creek. Had you had any sort of virus lately..cold, flu, etc? And are you overweight? If you've had a virus recently and are not overweight, or at least not by much, then you probably should make sure they do a C-peptide and GAD antibody test on you (they're both blood tests) to make sure you don't have T1.

Thank you for the responses. I guess I thought as my blood sugar level dropped I should feel better, but it makes sense that my body would be a little confused.

I am overweight, but haven't been sick in months. And I think they did every blood test possible in the ER. But just to be sure, I'll talk to my Dr. about other tests.

Thank you so much!

To be honest with you, your body is going to take awhile to get used to your blood sugars going down and not being so high... Those are pretty good numbers as far as it goes... What gets me is that they discharged you from the hospital so fast!!! I mean really, they should have kept you in the hospital for at least afew days to a week to regulate your blood sugars, plus discharging you with a 338 blood sugar is inept... Isn't there a better hospital in your area to use??
