A few months ago I was one point from being a diabetic. The dr. adopted a wait and see attitude. At that time I was having alittle eye bluriness off and on. This past week I have had tingling in both hands and off and on in my feet. I went out and bought a monitor and tested myself as my dr. wouldn't be in until Monday. The test showed 458. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, unless the meter was really off, OR you had something sugary on your finger, a reading that high would indicate that you are definitely diabetic. That, along with blurred vision and numbness and tingling, would be enough for me to say...find another doctor!

The sad fact is that often the fasting blood glucose level is the last to show indications of problems. You could have been having problems metabolizing carbohydrates for years before the fasting glucose levels show an increase.
Also, I don't know what you mean by "one point from being diabetic." Nowadays, fasting bg's of 100-125 are considered "pre-diabetic" and 126 or greater is considered diabetic. But a doctor who is really up on diabetes would be giving you some instructions and guidance as soon as your fasting numbers got as high as 110.

If you're overweight, the first line of attack for T2 diabetes (which is likely what it is if you're overweight) is diet and exercise. If you get really motivated, learn proper eating habits and add exercise into your life, you may be able to stay off medications for years. Here again a good doctor can help by referring you to a registered dietician (RD) or nutritionist who can educate you about how different foods act (especially carbohydrates) and give you advice as to meal planning and food choices.

If you're not overweight, then you may be developing T1 or T1.5, which is also called LADA, or Latent Adult-Onset T1. The way to determine this would be to do a C-peptide and GAD antibody test. Both are blood tests, and both are really the only way to determine which type of diabetes one has.

Regardless, ANY blood glucose of 458 would be enough to diagnose diabetes if it were done in a lab or at the doctor's office. There might be some skepticism because it was a home test, but for sure it should at least be a wake-up call to your doctor that he/she needs to be looking at this much more closely. If not, then as I said before...find another doctor!
