View Full Version : What happens if I'm hospitalized?

So I've just experienced my worst hypo-manic phase ever, and it has me wondering what happens in the future if I ever need to be hospitalized?

--who decides what happens: my DH, my Pdoc, whatever doctor is there?
--could DH prevent them from using certain treatments he knows I don't support, or from keeping me there if he thinks it's best?
--is there any kind of legal arrangement we should be thinking about?

I will be discussing these questions with my doctor, but right now he's checking on me daily by phone, and it seems better to save this sort of non-emergency stuff for an actual appointment.

Thank you so much for those who already kindly answered my earlier question. If I should be looking elsewhere for this information, please let me know.

Your P-doc..... will make the decisions.. but you decide if you if you stay at a hospital. You can leave when you want to ...........

Your pdoc will decide what happens if you go in involintarily. But also it could be any doc...such as if you are taken to the ER for a psychiatric reason.

As far as your DH preventing them from keeping you there or from giving you treatments, that all depends. If you go in involuntarily, then you can leave any time you like as long as the pdoc there says that you are not a harm to yourself or others. If the pdoc says that you are a harm to yourself or others, then you will have to go to court and they will decide whether or not you will be able to leave the hospital.

The same thing goes for refusing the treatment that the pdoc offers you. The courts can also force you to comply with the treatment that the pdoc is offering you.

But don't be scared, these are extreme circumstances and if you are really that sick then maybe you really do need to stay in the hospital longer and take the treatments that the pdocs think are necessary for you to get better.

So, I don't think that there is any kind of legal arragements that need to be made unless you want to leave the hospital against the pdocs orders.

When I was manic I had no problems leaving the hospital the first time, but on the second time I went in on my own and realized that I needed the help so I stayed as long as the pdoc told me to.

Hope that helps and let us know how you are doing today, ok? Take care.

Actually if you're a danger to yourself or others, they can put you in on a 72 hour hold, and you have to stay for that length of time. Mainly this is for suicidal people. But you're pdoc or tdoc through your pdoc could make that call.
