Hi all,

I was wondering what makes your glucose level increase? This is for my Gran. She's 86 and is on Insulin twice a day. This might sound like a strange question but my Gran had fried onions (she loves them) 3 days in a row and every night she had the onions her sugar level was high. So I was wondering if this happens to everyone else? I've told her no more onions. :)

Hi! I have diabetes type 2 , i am not on insulin but i take medications. Just about anything high in sugar and refined carbs (bread, pasta, rice, etc) will cause my blood sugar to spike (go up). This morning i had 2 average size pancakes with margarine and syrup (normal amount) and my glucose shot up to 175, and this was 4 hours after taking the first half of my meds. I felt fine otherwise.;)

If the onions are fried in butter, depending on the rest of your diet, a high fat meal can make you more insulin resistant. Hence the higher blood sugar.

Just a guess.

Wouldn't the batter on the onions have something to do with it too???

For nymi06: Just for thought, there is a pancake mix out there by Hodgeson Mill Multi-grain pancake mix (I get it at Sweet Bay in Florida) and it has 17g/carbs and no white flour, as opposed to the other mixes with white flour and 26g/carbs per serving. And maybe you should use the sugar free syrup rather than regular. And if you don't like the artifiical sweeteners, there is an Anjamiama (sp?) Lite syrup that has 1/2 the sugar in it (no sweeteners). I use that for my son, I don't eat it at all. Just "food";) for thought.

I wasn't thinking onion rings, but onions just fried in a pan (like over a steak), so if batter was involved it could be the culprit.

Hi all

Thank you for your replies. It was just chopped onions fried in water with a of tsp of gravy for the added flavour. I was really curious because she's had fried onions in the past but never had high blood sugar. But thinking about it we did change our brand of gravy as recently as last week so maybe it was this, perhaps it had more sugar in it or something. :confused:

Just "food";) for thought.Thanks lilbit, actually pancakes were not at all on my menu, i was making some for my granddaughter and could not resist:nono: When i was a kid (i'm goiing back to the early 70's) there was a buckwheat pancake mix, can't recall the name, my mom used to make and they weren't bad. I will try the multigrain, sounds good.

Thanks lilbit, actually pancakes were not at all on my menu, i was making some for my granddaughter and could not resist:nono: When i was a kid (i'm goiing back to the early 70's) there was a buckwheat pancake mix, can't recall the name, my mom used to make and they weren't bad. I will try the multigrain, sounds good.

Hodgeson Mill also makes a buckwheat one too, but they are 26g/carbs I think per serving. I don't know which one would be better on the blood sugar. I haven't made them yet. I don't normally eat pancakes, not that I don't love them mind you, but I bought the mix for my son, who loves pancakes and I'm going to make up a batch and freeze them, so on school days, I can just grab a couple out of there and pop them in the freezer. I was buying the aunt jemima frozen ones, but I have become obsessed about what he eats, and I think these will definitely be healthier. I do the same thing with his french toast, and I make it out of stone ground whole wheat bread and don't use sugar (he's not a diabetic, but he's had some lows already and he's only 3! so I assume he inherited my sugar problems). Anyway, someday, I'll test myself with the pancakes and see how they do.

Pop them in the freezer???!!! I'm such a ninny:D I meant, pop them in the toaster;)

My own opinion--------------------She is 86 and loves onions--LET HER HAVE THEM.
1. onions convert to sugar, the reason for the higher numbers
2. the numbers will come down
3. you could increase the insulin based on the numbers. If my number is high i inject more insulin to bring it into range.
4. At her age the long term side effects are to me negligable.
5. Let her enjoy the onions.

Thank you. She's always loved her fried onions every two weeks. There is one more thing. Can mincemeat effect sugar levels or make a diabetic vomit? I'm asking because she tried a new brand of frozen mincemeat recently and she's had it 3 times in a home-made shepherd pie and each time she's vomited the next day. The mincemeat was all cooked thoroughly and other people who eat it didn't have any symptoms so I'm wondering if there could be something in this new brand of mincemeat that doesn't agree with Gran. I just thought I would ask. Thank you all again. :)

mincemeat-I know nothing about. I guess the best thing to do is go to another brand and see what happens. I don't get the "next day" thing. At 86 her stomache may be getting a little sensitive. Has she started any new meds that may interact with the stuff in the mincemeat?

thank you for your reply. i thought i would ask because i haven't heard of mincemeat causing any problems. nope she's been on the same meds for about a year. maybe it is just this brand of mincemeat - something in it doesn't agree with her or she has a sensitive tummy. she has got bowel problems - diverticulitis which causes her to have diarrhea and abdominal cramps. i'll try her on a different brand of mincemeat. thank you again.
