View Full Version : I think I have BP

I'm a 22 year old man in college right now. This hasn't hit me until I came to here, so I think what triggered it was just having college jitters in general. If I indeed have this illness, then it's likely that I inherited it from my father, since he has it as well (although his is much worse, because of his unfortunate life choices).

When I researched they had a list of signs and symptoms, here are the ones I noticed that apply to me:

· Feelings of heightened energy, creativity, and euphoria
· Sleeping too much, or can't sleep
· Lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood
· Feelings of guilt
· Racing thoughts; jumping from one idea to another
· A lasting period of behavior that is different from usual
· Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
· Delusions (false, strongly held beliefs not influenced by logical reasoning or explained by a person's usual cultural concepts)

This Thursday I'm going to see a Physician on campus to get checked out.

Do you have a psychiatrist or therapist on campus that you could go to? They would be better at diagnosing BiPolar than a general practioner.

I just found out that indeed there is a psychiatrist on our campus health center. I read his bio on the school's website and he deals with Bipolar disorder. I'll inform you all about my diagnosis after my appointment on Thursday!

I just got back recently from talking to the psychiatrist. He gave me a mood chart to fill out for one week, then he will evaluate it next week. He says he can't conclude BP quite yet and that it might be just tremendous social stress in college, from the specific things I been telling him.

Well it sounds like you got a good consciencientous pdoc and not one that's just rushing to find a DX.

Yes, he is very conscience of me, especially knowing that I'm in college and I going through the normal college adjustments and such. Also, I feel much better, now that I'm fully aware of what BP is all about. The past few days my mind has been very clear and with the help of some of my close friends here that really helped.

Hi,

I am glad you went, good for you! The mood chart sounds like a good idea, and college can cuase termendous stress, he's right.

You are doing just the right thing, on the road to getting yourself together, and I congratulate you. Let us know how it goes, okay?

hey bro please dont take this the wrong way..i have seen it now for over 10 yrs before i was dxed i remember as a child 11-13 yrs of age locking myself in my room feeling like the weight of the entire world had come down on me, and i would sit and write and think of ways to do away with myself...back then being bp was not at all popular if you were labeled you were "crazy" and ppl stayed away from you.....these days i see the trends change its like "cool" to be bp or something and its not it is pure hell

Update: It's been over a week. I gave him the mood chart and it was pretty much normal across the board. It's mostly just me learning to accept everything the way it is and move on. I still sort of feel the "BP" in me, but I'm not exactly sure if in fact it is that or not. Regardless, I'm doing the right things to live a good live. I'm being a positive, happy, relaxed person.

I feel great right now. I have very high self-esteem. That really helped. I had to research on how to have high self-esteem. I accept and value myself unconditionally. I acknowledge my strengths and limitations. I counteract shortcomings with something positive.

When I was in college in 1966.............long time ago.......my symptoms really stated to wreck havock on me, and I didn't know what was the matter. In fact I would not know for another 20 years. My worst problem was anxiety, where I would have panic attacks during social events, at times I had a phobia and couldn't look people in the eye, and so on. Later mania and depression would become a problem.

How bad do you feel when you are down? How long does this last.

When you are up what are some of the activities or thoughts that you will sense or do? When you are up, are there things you do, that later seem foolish?

Strykeback,

Good for you for going to check things out. It sounds as though, with a normal mood chart, you are going through a lot of stress and reacting to it, and college can sure do that.

I agree that bp has become a designer disease, just like anorexia. I have both chronically most of my life, as many others here, and no, you don't want it.

Sometimes, it seems to me that a lot of people are "trying" to be anorexic, bp, whatever the mental illness du jour is. If they only knew.

Can you continue to see a counselor for a while? These illnesses can begin in early 20's, too, so who knows? But I think that you might benefit from counseling to help you cope, too.

Please feel free to post here, too,
Seaturtle
