For at least 10 years now I have had sporatic pain in my foot/ankle. I will be fine one day, and then wake up and have to be on crutches for 2-3 days and then the pain goes away again. I have had x-rays and ct skans, had the joints tapped for crystals and tons of bloodwork. When the pain starts, my uric acid levels are well above normal, and much higher then when there is no pain. No crystals have been found when the joints were tapped however. I had been diagnosed with gout by a podiatrist, then a rheumatologist retracted the diagnosis a week later. Fortunately, this hasn't happened in over a year now. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for what brings it on, ie...activities, diet etc. The pain is excrutiating when it flares up. About the only thing that works for the pain is having a nerve block. Has anyone else ever had this, or know what it may be?

It could actually be a type of gout....pseudogout....look it up. Did your doctor check for this? They would check for crystals, but they are a different type of calcium crystal than what you would find with regular gout. The crystals are formed from a salt and not uric acid build up. Check in to this.

Yes, thought of that as well. When the joints were tapped, nothing conclusive was ever found though. I've yet to have the joint tapped during the most painful time of the flare up though as there weren't any available appointments. The last time I went in my Dr. told me to just come in when it flared up and he would work me in. Fortunately, that has been over a year. I just figured I would see if anyone else has had this problem since I stumbled onto this forum. It seems like a great network of people.

I get a similar pain in my wrist, but I've never had it checked. It seems to come and go. Right now I have a flare up that's been going on for about two weeks, and nothing I do seems to help. But as soon as I make an appointment to have it looked at it will stop and I'll be looked at as if I had worms coming out of my head. So...until it really does anything more than come and go, I'll just wait it out.
