Hi, my mother is 49 and is getting the run around from her doctors. Her periods have become heavier. She has 'spells' as she calls them, she will become dizzy, nauseas (sp?), have a flushing tingly feeling in her stomache and torso, her stomache will spasm and tighten up (she says it feels like knots), she will vomitt or have diarrhea or both during these 'spells'. They last for an hour at the most and then their gone, and they come and go every few days? The first time she went to the ER, they told her she is going through menopause and she will have a rough one. Her pcp doctor says that doesn't sound like menopause and is running alot of blood test, did a pap, stool sample, urine sample and a other simple test. Her blood work has come back normal, as well as the urine sample. The other results are not back yet. Is it possible this could be a really bad menopause? Or something worse?

I am worried about her. She's my best friend, the grandmother to my son, my heart. Please help.

Please don't worry too much. As you said the results that are back were normal, so try not to let the old brain convince you of anything horrible right now. You mentioned the ER and her PCP. Nothing against either of those, but has she seen an OB/GYN? They really are the experts when it comes to these kinds of things.

After starting peri-menopause I am no longer surprised by any symptom that shows up. I now have anxiety and high blood pressure, horrible mood swings, periods that are either like someone let loose the Hoover Dam or almost non-existant, hot flashes, more cramps than all of puberty combined and short term memory loss. The worst part is that I know there is more, yet to come.

The stomach spasms, the vomiting, the heavier periods, diarhea, all sound a little like a fybroid tumor, possibly. Don't get scared. Fybroids are somewhat common and are benign. Many times, they are just treated with meds and sometimes removed, depending on the situation.

I would definitely recommend a good GYN. This is their field and they have more experience with reproductive system issues. I am sure one could help figure this out.

You sound like a wonderful daughter. Your mom is a lucky woman to have you in her life. Best of luck to you both and God bless. Please let us know how she is doing. (and you too)

Sounds like a gall bladder problem to me. It would be good if her PCP had it ultrasounded.
