Hello all,
As I'm getting older I want to try for another child asap.
I gave birth to my daughter almost 1 year ago, still breastfeed and have not gotten my period yet. Is it possible to conceive?
I hear all the time that people get pregnant shortly after giving birth. Does it mean that they have gotten their periods right away as well?

Hi there,

Some of the women on this board are experts when it comes to conceiving, and I'm no expert, but I know a thing or two! You can still get pregnant, without having had a period. If you don't know when you're ovulating however, it can be trickier than if you have a regular period. So those women who get pregnant right away after having a baby might be having periods, or they might not. I am kind of in the same boat as you. My ds turns 1 on Wednesday (May 7), and dh and I have been trying for a baby for 3 months, after suffering a miscarriage in January. I just got af today, unfortunately so I guess this isn't our month! I breastfeed exclusively as well, but I have also been having a period since he was 4 months old, so it's different for everyone.
I have read that if you try to have longer period of time between feedings for your lo, the more likely you are to ovulate. I would think that once your baby is weaned (or you begin the weaning process), you will begin having regular periods again.
But as far as getting pregnant, yes--it can happen, it just might be harder because you don't know when you're going to release that egg. Good luck!

WhiskersOnKittens-
Thanks for your reply. Sometimes I feel like I know nothing about the body! I'm going to try to feed less during the day and see what happens. I read on another board that some women don't get their periods the entire time they breastfeed, even if it's years!
I feel this pressure to have a baby now or never! Maybe it'll help if I have sex with my husband more than once every 10 days.
Good luck to you.

Some women get their period 6-8 weeks after childbirth. For others, it is longer. Breastfeeding can cause you not to ovulate, and therefor make it harder to conceive. That can also cause you not to have a period. There is probably nothing wrong with you.
