Nasal sores??? Geez. Who the heck needs that? I wonder if you're getting those what else is the stuff doing.
Sorry...I've never heard of miacalcin. I've only tried Fosamax and quit that after 3 months. I'm very suspect of anything pharmaceutical at this point.

I took Miacalcin for almost nine months. The reason I went off it is because of sinus issues (no nasel sores or anything like that, just slight dryness). Otherwise I did not have any problem with it at all. In fact I may go back on it. I have been able to improve my hip DEXA scores quite a bit just by exercising (weight bearing) daily for one hour daily, improving diet, upping vitamin D and calcium intake, and hormone replacement therapy. My spine has improved slightly but is slow going and Miacalcin is supposed to help more with the spine.
For now I am refusing to take the bisphosphonates like Fosomax or Actonel. I don't like the long term risks and side effect profile of those. That's just my personal choice. For me a few minor sinus problems beats esophogal erosion, and I am VERY sensitive to many drugs. I didn't have a problem stomach wise with Miacalcin though.
For those not familiar with Miacalcin, it is a synthetic version of calcitonin which is a hormone secreted by the thyroid gland. Miacalcin comes from salmon origin, not human. It's been on the market much much longer than the bisphosphonates and has a good safety track record but is not considered as effective as other meds for preventing fractures. Technically it is supposed to be prescribed to women who are at least five years post menopausal (not sure of the reason) but I was only 34 when I took it and I had just had a hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries one year prior.
Hope this info helps!

Does anyone knw if that is approved for pre-menopausal women. I am 29 and was dx w/ osteopenia about 1 1/2 yr ago. I have taken actinel in the past and currently take fosomax but I am concerned because both drugs are for post menapausal women.

Hi, I've just started taking this (maybe 3 weeks or so). I'm 48, but went through the menopause very early (28), and unfortunately was not given H.R.T. Recently I had a fall, and it 'appears' I've sustained spinal fractures. Currently awaiting the results of a C.T. scan. The side effects for me are nausea and headaches, which I know are related to this drug, because it comes on so quickly after inhalation.
So I guess the verdict's still out for me.

Hi there,
I had chemo induced menopause at 26. I was on hormones, but not any more. I am now 32. Right now I purchased a walkvest. You should check it out.
Sincerely
Indersonu

Hi there back...Is there a reason you have come off your hormones?
Mine was a 'natural' if you can call it that...bad genes :D. Sorry to hear yours was chemically induced.
Maybe we should start a new thread about bone health and early menopause. Take Care :)

I was on miacalcin nasal spray and had no side effects. It seems to be a pretty safe medication. I can't take oral meds for osteo due to digestive problems and experience side effects to many kinds of meds. However, I continued to have bone loss on the miacalcin and my scores were quite low when diagnosed, so my dr switched me to Forteo.
