View Full Version : Valtrex as a daily regime

Sorry for all the questions, but being new to this I'm full of them. I've read that some people take a daily dose of Valtrex to help prevent outbreaks. Is there any reason NOT to do this? In other words, after my first outbreak is over (soon, please...), do I have to wait for my next outbreak before starting this, or is it something I can begin in order to try to prevent a future outbreak? Thanks

Hi Red,

You definitely do not have to wait for a fresh OB (outbreak) to start on a preventive dosage. Doing this is considered to be a good idea during the first year, to help you come to terms with it emotionally while your body stabilises with it physically. The stress from finding out you have it and getting frequent outbreaks can bring on more outbreaks, since stress is a significant factor in what triggers an OB.

It can minimise it spreading to new OB sites too. Herpes is typically most active during the first year because your body is still building up antibodies, so the virus can replicate more easily and spread to more/new sites. A study on Valtrex was just recently released that proves a daily dosage of it will reduce viral shedding significantly.

Talk to your doctor about it. If s/he is hesitant, go to herpes.org and print out their article on Treatment for Herpes and bring it to him/her. Many doctors are not up to date on herpes treatment and facts, so it might help to go armed with some current information if you meet with resistance from your doc.

Hi Red, I've been on Valtrex for 2 years and another med 1-1/2 year before that. I highly recommend taking suppressive meds - it gets your life as close to normal as possible. I'm in a committed long-term relationship and have been able to enjoy a very fulfilling sex life, all because of the medication. I suggest you go for it!

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm seeing the doctor Friday for a followup visit, and I'm going to ask to be put on Valtrex. I'll bring the article along just in case he says no!

Yes, I believe so. Someone I know who had type 1 orally was prescribed Valtrex to deal with OBs.

Good luck with the doc!
