Keep using the drops, sometimes it will take a while for them to work. My eyes were dry and I had to try several different drops to get the one I was happy with. My eyes were dry for a couple of years before I ws actually told they were dry, I honestly did not know what was wrong and had several eye appointments to try and find out. I now use drops morning and night and I don't have much trouble anymore. Try getting one that is preservative free.

Sunny,

Does too much tears indicate dry eyes as mentioned previously. Or, are the oil glands that lubricate the eye ball not working right?
Are you masking your problem with daily eye drops?

Thanks ---aj

My advice is to seek a second opinion. And make sure the eye doctor is an MD.

While I cannot tell you the actual reasons you get dry eye or how it works, dry eye is very common, and no, I do not believe I am masking any problem, I am fixing the problem with the eye drops. In some cases there is an implant that can be put in the tear ducts that help people, but that is in the most extreme cases, mine is not extreme, just annoying, very annoying. But having used the drops for 9 years not, my eyes are fine, except when sping arrives and when fall begins, then they can get annoying again. As AnnD said, you can get a second opinion, always a good idea.

I was told by the Eye Tech(2/28) when being examined by an eye Doctor (did not discuss this with the Doc -- he examined the eyes for cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration) that the tearing is a form of dry eyes and I have been recently having off and on so I guess I have dry eyes.

The Tech gave me several sample bottles of Optive eye drops to be used twice daily and--- that the lubricant in the drops would work.

Well I have not been very faithful about using the drops but do massage the oil glands in the lids several times daily and use hot compresses prior to massaging. I don't know if I am massaging properly but have been shown how to do it several times using Ocusoft eye lid scubs. When the tearing burns -- I think from the salt in tears-- I wash my eyes with a sterile solution that I bought from Wal Mart and I use a glycerine Hypoallergenic soap on my face as well as eyes.

I have never used any form of eye drops. So, I know I have extremely fortunate. But, I think the most strain I get is from using this computer. As I have gotten older I have found it more of a problem. I have been married 53 years this August so I guess I need to be more diligent with my eyes & vision care.

I do believe our 2 eyes are the most complex organs of the body-- that I have as well as many people take too much for granted.

I wish ya'll well---Harry

If you have dry eye, you are not producing enough tears on a regular basis. Ofter when your eyes get really dry, you get "reflex" tears that can just flood from your eyes. These aren't normal tears and don't lubricate. The natural tear drops can help keep the amount of reflex tears down. The drops are a good first start.

I began using the restasis when I started using the other drops excessively. I have also had my tear ducts plugged. They keep whatever tears I do produce in my eye instead of draining them right off. The combination of all of these items, and allergy drops, have helped me get my dry eye under better control over the years. I tried one thing at a time until I found the combination that worked best for me. I also visit my opthomologist every year even though my vision is good so he can check on the dry eye. I also recommend wearing sunglasses when outdoors. The dry eye has made me sun sensitive and I get some major tearing when driving sometimes. Polarized glasses that wrap around are great.

Good luck.
