I read recently that those with Bipolar should not drink coffee.... the caffeine changes the level of the drugs you are taking... I am only having 2 cups per day which is the lowest level I have had in years....

My pdoc does not like for me to drink/eat anything with caffeine in it.

Hi,

I gave up coffee a couple of years ago, only have a few sips of decaf instant int he morning and then pour the rest down the drain. Maybe 2 or 3 cups of tea during the day, no soda, a little chocolate pudding.

I don't think I could tolerate coffee now, and I was a coffee freak (it's one of the things I love best in the world.) If you can, I think it might be worth a try to slowly cut it down and see if it makes a difference.

i don't know whether or not it has to do with the bp or not but i have always been super sensitive to coffee...the caffeine would throw me through the roof after just one cup even. this was especially the reaction once i cut out all soda for a few years.

i drink coffee these days but hardly any. just a few sips and i'm good to go.

alcohol has an effect on medication more than coffee does. coffee is just likely to throw one into a manic state.

One of the most common conditions that go along with bipolar is anxiety. Caffiene can wreak havoc on your nerves, and I do my best to avoid it for that. And then again, of course, when I am manic I consume as much of it as I can (whoever created Red Bull is my best friend during those periods) because racing feels better when you race faster.

My glass of iced tea sent me into a HORRIBLE manic state! I was completely nonfuctional, unable to care for my myself. Be careful with all caffeine intake.

Klyn you are totally right about "when racing all you want to do is race faster." It can feel so good. I don't drink more caffeine when manic though. I usually drink more alcohol which I think is some kind of desperate attempt to slow down a little bit! I don't know what would happen if I drank more caffeine than normal!

Unfortunately I drink a lot of caffeine. I have at least 6 cans of diet pepsi a day. I know, shame on me, LOL. I know I should cut back not only because of the meds but I could probably lose more weight too. But it is just so hard. I am too addicted to it I guess. I only drink tea every once in a while and I have never like coffee.
