After completing the 2 years on Forteo, the DEXA at my endo's office indicated:
Spine T-score improved from -3.1 to -2.3
Hip T-score improved from -2.4 to -2.1

The endo wanted me to start Boniva or Reclast, but I declined. For the time being I'll just continue with my alternative therapies (vibrating on the Juvent 1000, eating natto for K2, chewing Xylichew) and see if that will be sufficient to prevent any BMD decline for the next year.

Well, congratulations are in order; you must be pleased with these results:)! I'm curious: what prompted you to get the DEXA scan for diagnosing osteo in the first place? I ask because it's somewhat uncommon for males to be tested routinely. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the medical profession on this one, just that the "push" is to test post-menopausal females.

...I'm curious: what prompted you to get the DEXA scan for diagnosing osteo in the first place?... Where I worked they offered a heel scan, which I had never had before. It indicated low bone density, which was subsequently confirmed by DEXA.

Hi Starfish: I just wanted to add something quickly since I don't want to take away from Pika's wonderful news thread, but both my brothers have had dxa's, and did so because my Endo recommended it after I was dx'd. The tests haven't changed anything they are doing or how they look at health. We come from a family of vitamin enthusiasts, so they are just continuing with the normal routine of exercise and vitamins they've always taken. BTW they are both in the high osteopenia range close to osteoporosis, but they won't take any osteo meds. They are avid hikers and runners for 40 some years:)

PikaB-That is fantastic news!! Congratulations ! I also want to thank you for being an inspiration to me on this journey. Your clear minded approach to finding research, forming a plan based on your research, and following through in a disciplined manner made a difference in how I approached the diagnosis.I hope that you can hold on to those gains and continue to build more bone.

I'll be very content if I can just keep my BMD from going down in the next year, since the standard mainstream therapy is to follow Forteo with bisphosphonates, and with good reason. In one study ("The importance of bisphosphonate therapy in maintaining bone mass in men after therapy with teriparatide"), patients who followed Forteo with bisphosphonates increased spinal BMD an additional 5.1% in the following year, whereas the patients who did not follow Forteo with bisphosphonates decreased spinal BMD 3.7% in the following year.
