Having my left foot done May 22nd. Are ppl always given crutches? How often not?
Or are we usually given a boot thats slanted to walk on the heel?
How often is a cast used instead of a boot?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if your surgeon didn't cover this along with drawing for you the exact procedure he will use, the recovery time and process along with length of time you'll be NWB, etc., you need another doctor.

i dont remember him saying anything about crutches
he did draw a diagram of my foot, showed me the xrays, etc
He did write down 4-6wks limited activity followed by 4-6wks to get back full use
Guess I really dont want to believe it may be 4-6WEEKS NWB!

If he said "limited activity" rather than "non weight bearing" you will probably be in a walking boot or cast which will "limit your activity." If so, you wont need crutches.

Most I hear for just bunionectomy unless it is a severe bunion that involves more of the foot-- I think the surg shoe is about normal. I had a pretty bad bunion and almost had to have the more extensive surgery which would have put me in a cast but instead I was able to be in a slanted shoe which allows for partial weight bearing --in that for 5 weeks and then was moved to a flat surg shoe for the next two.. then to a sneaker.. I also had to have additional surgery on my big toe so I think I took longer to move along than some. Either way sounds like you will be in the shoe I was in.and you can move around with a cane but all is very slow.. took me twenty mins to walk 6 blocks and usually takes about 7 mins.. you learn patience:) Good luck.

Itsanewme - I had chevron osteotomy 13 days ago. My doctor's instructions were to be non-weight bearing with the use of crutches. I go for a follow up on Wednesday so hopefully I will have a better idea of where my recovery is at and if I will still need the crutches. I also was given a surgical shoe however I don’t usually wear it since I am not putting any weight on my foot. I only wear it when I go out of the house in case I bump my foot. I haven’t had much pain after the first 3 days so that’s promising. I will keep you posted. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can get rid of these crutches!!!
