Hi there,
I had chemically induced menopause at the age of 26. I am now currently 32 and was diagnosed recently with a dvt in my right leg. (blood clot due to the birth control pill). This is why I am not on hormones anymore. I am currently on heparin injections for the past few months. In addition I am on synthroid and nexium for my acid reflex.

I drink milk in addtion to calcium supplements and take vitamin d. I walk at least an hour a day with my new walkvest. I also pray to god that all goes well. Currently I am not on any medication to build my bone density. Just praying to God that all goes well.

I don't really know what is in store for me. But with all the support in this forum. I am sure that I will achieve success, and health. The people are so kind and supportive here.

;)

Hi Indersonu, i didn't realize you were so young, a bit younger than our daughter. Since you not taking any osteo drugs have you considered strontium citrate to help your bones? I've been taking it for almost 2 years and haven't had any side effects. I had improvements on my last DEXA after taking if for a little lest than a year I too take synthroid daily and will for ever. What are you taking it for? Thyroid issues can be hard on the bones, but i'm sure your drs. are on top of that part of it.

How do you like the walkvest? Did you get the right size or did you have to alter it like i did? I wear mine for walks and have also started wearing it when i run errnads. We just bought an old fashion reel lawn mower and i wear it while mowing the grass...simple mowing has become aerobic exercise...hahaha.

Are you including weight training as part of your fitness program? Strong muscles go a long way in helping keep the bones strong and healthy.

You are so right about this board being helpful and supportive. Even though none of us will ever meet i feel we are a group of caring friends who look after each other. Have a good day, enjoy your walk . take care..phyllis

Hi Indersonu...Mine was natural at 28. I blame my mother :D. I've just turned 48. I was never prescribed H.R.T which upon reflection was a big mistake. I've had two bone density tests (2004 and '06). It appears that my lumbar spine is in the osteopenic range, and femoral neck at the osteopenic threshold. I've been a vegetarian since I was 10. I've recently started to take calcium and vit. D with some other supplements (other issues). Always exercised up until the last few years, as a consequence of developing R.S.D. (Chronic regional pain syndrome). Unfortunately just had a fall, x-rays suspect spinal fracture(s), just awaiting results of a C.T. scan, so I'll get back more substantively then.
One thing I have learnt as a result of recent cervical cancer (C.I.S), is that there are other 'consequences' to an early menopause without H.R.T. Check out the menopause section as well (search under my user name) Hopefully you can learn from my experiences and avoid the problems I've developed. I'm due to see a specialist gynae soon, so will be reporting back there as well as soon as I'm better informed. It's all good if it helps somebody else :) Take care.

Hi Indersonu: I'm sorry about your early meno, and the dvt, that must be really rough on you. What are they doing for the dvt, aside from the heparin, and do the drs think that the med alone will dissolve the clot?

I also wondered if you have had a dxa, because I can't find that info in your post anywhere? Did some one tell you that you also have osteoporosis?

You're doing the right things as far as supplements and exercise go, but without knowing what your bmd is, it's hard to say if what you're doing is enough.

I went through early non surgical meno at 30, and am now 54 and was dx'd with a -3.6 t score 5 years ago; I've been on Forteo for 23 mos and am doing great with no new fractures. When I went through meno, I was taking the required calcium, D etc and exercising, but I ended up with severe osteo anyway, because no one thought to put me on hormones. That doesn't mean that will happen to everyone, but I don't know too many Drs that feel that supplements alone will stave off bone loss. In my case I had a history of osteoporosis in the family, so I wasn't surprised that I got it when you add the loss of hormones to that, and I ended up with many spinal fractures. My initial fracture was from a car accident, but the subsequent ones were from osteo.

If you don't want to take bone meds, I would think about what Phyllis said and consider SC, but I'm not sure if that would be contraindicated for a blood clot or not. What does your Dr say? If I was in your shoes I would concentrate more on eliminating the clot and then figure out what to do from there with your bones if you indeed need some help with meds. Hopefully the supplements and exercise will be enough, but with the loss of hormones you are in a riskier place than most for bone loss. The main thing at this point is to control or eliminate the dvt problem and then deal with the bone loss. Don't panic over this, since that could cause more problems with your clotting issues.

The major problem with loss of hormones is the loss of bone density among other things, but a blood clot is more pressing at the moment.

Could you let us know what your bone density score is, so we can get a better understanding of the severity of the two problems?

Good luck with all you have on your plate and let us know a bit more. Take care...

Hi there,
I had a normal bone density, in October, and now I have been diagnosed with osteopenta, so now my doctor is contimplating whether to put me back on hormones or bisphophates, he said that he will consult with other doctors and then get back to me. I have been excercising with a school bag and 4 pound weights and from anywhere from an hour and more per day, and still got osteopenta due to the heparin and no horomones. I just received the walk vest and love it . I plan on trying again and only with more activity. I have even walked on stairs. I forgot to mention that I am anemic and I take 100mg of ferrus fumarate every day. About the stromium, I will talk about that to my doctor but that carries the same risk as hormones, blood clots. Therefore I am better off with hormones.
As far as weight training goes, I am trying my best, if my body will allow me.

sincerely

Indersonu:D

Hi Indersonu: It's sound like you are doing all the right things to protect yourself from letting the osteopenia progress to osteoporosis. You mentioned hormones, and I wondered if that is okay to take with the dvt? I've never had a blood clot, but I have been checked for them after surgeries, and I thought hormones could make them worse, but I don't know for sure.

You are correct about the Strontium Citrate possibly causing blood clots so I guess that won't work.

Your exercises and supplements sound great so hopefully that will be enough with osteopenia. There are many people with osteopenia that never reach the point of osteoporosis so let's hope you're one of those.

Good luck with all the different things you need to resolve and keep us posted.
